"There is no substitute for one-to-one advice from aÌýtop medical expert and that's what we offer our callers and emailers. But for each person who calls to ask for help, someone else phones in to pass on a tip or a suggestion -Ìýit's a great programme to present."

Oral HealthÌý
In the week of National No-Smoking Day (Wednesday 8 March) Check Up is about the detrimental effects of tobacco on the mouth.
Mouth cancer
Mouth cancer is on the increase in the UK . This cancer can be found in the lips, tongue, cheeks and throat. The first sign of the disease is often a non-healing mouth ulcer or a red or white patch in the mouth. If you have a mouth ulcer that hasn't healed after three weeks, or you notice any unusual changes in your mouth it's important to get it checked out by a dentist or doctor.
Lifestyle
Cancer of the mouth used to be a disease of older men but now it is being found in younger people and in more women. Smoking, drinking alcohol and a poor diet without fruit, vegetables and fibre, can be contributory factors to the cancer's development. Treatment can be successful if the disease is detected early.Ìý
Barbara Myers will be joined by maxillo-facial surgeon Iain Hutchison, a leading specialist in oral health, to answer your questions on mouth problems. She'll be finding out when you should be worried about ulcers and sore gums and when you should seek medical advice.
