Sore Throats
In this episode of Check Up, Barbara Myers will be taking listeners' questions about sore throats.
Barbara's guest in the studio is Chris Milford, Consultant ENT Surgeon at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford and Honorary Secretary of the ENT Association.

70% of all sore throats are caused by viruses and will clear up in a few days, but what do you do if your sore throat just won't go away?
Do you persist with home remedies such as salt water gargling or drinking liquorice tea or is it time to consult a doctor?
Inflamed tonsils, or tonsillitis, can result in severe sore throats.
They can normally be treated with pain-relieving syrups or antibiotics but some people opt for surgery and have their tonsils taken out.
It's not always an easy decision.
Other sore throats are caused by acid reflux from the stomach, glandular fever and, very rarely, throat cancer. |
