"There is no substitute for one-to-one advice from aÌýtop medical expert and that's what we offer our callers and emailers. But for each person who calls to ask for help, someone else phones in to pass on a tip or a suggestion -Ìýit's a great programme to present."

| | | | Wanted Hair and Unwanted Hair
Whether your problem is with baldness or unwanted hair, Barbara Myers and her guest Dr Ann Robinson will be in the Check Up studio with advice.
Hair Loss - Men Baldness in men can run in families – some resort to hair transplants or wigs. You might have heard of special shampoos which encourage your hair to grow back - but do they really work? So-called male-pattern baldness starts at the temples and crown and can alsoÌýaffect women after the menopause, though this is rare.
Hair Loss – Women Pregnancy and illness can affect the hair – and treatments like chemotherapy can cause severe hair loss. There’s no specific treatment for alopecia areata – small bald patches of normal-looking skin –Ìýbut the hair does grow back. It can be a symptom of an auto-immune illness, which should be ruled out by tests.
Unwanted Hair Excessive hair – or hirsutism – can be caused in women by high levels of male hormones, as seen in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Many women use electrolysis or bleaching to disguise it, or take a contraceptive pill to reduce the high level of hormones.Ìý Laser treatment is another option, but you may have problems getting it on the NHS.
