Parkinson's Disease
Barbara Myers is back with a new series of Check Up, the health phone-in, where you put your questions direct to the experts. In the first programme, Barbara and her guest will be answering your queries on Parkinson’s Disease. Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition affecting movements such as walking, talking and writing. It is named after Dr James Parkinson (1755-1824), the London doctor who first identified Parkinson’s as a specific condition.
In the UK, one in 500 people, or around 120,000 individuals have Parkinson’s. Usually symptoms appear after the age of 50 and the risk of getting Parkinson’s increases with age. Parkinson’s has three main symptoms - tremor, muscular stiffness that can affect posture and forming facial expressions, and a slowing of movement.
So when should we be concerned that we or someone we know is showing the early symptoms of the disease? Does the condition run in families? What is the treatment that doctors usually prescribe and what are your options should conventional therapy stop being effective.
