I am rather surprised that Arnish Lighthouse hasn't mentioned anything about the new restoration project in Stornoway commemorating that wonderful period when the island was owned by opium dealers in the shape of Jardine Matheson.
The town fathers are to be congratulated on resurrecting the memory of a trade that continues today in the ghettos of all our major towns and cities. I think a balance should be struck however and I look forward to a huge sculpture of a bottle of Lea and Perrins sauce at the ferry terminal and a twenty foot box of soap powder in the main car park in memory of Lord Leverhulme.

The Times crossword had the clue 'Island in the Outer Hebrides' 6 letters in its Thursday crossword. It shows how cunning the Tourist Information Board is in Tarbert and how low it will stoop to get cheap publicity for the island. Anyone else spotted any such blatant plugs lately? Is this the sort of vigilance you are looking for?
