"Nature is full of surprises, so the programme can investigate fascinating and challenging areas in our relations with the natural world without being too technical or preachy. My job is brilliant because, as a link between the listener and the subject, I can discover new information and ideas which help people make up their own minds on important issues."

A dark and brooding ancient yew tree in the depths of the Wrekin Forest |
The Sounds of Britain 4Ìý- The Wrekin Forest
The Wrekin, a mini-mountain in Shropshire, is the subject of the final Sounds of Britain audio portrait presented by Paul Evans.Ìý At 407 metres, it's very visible even from quite some distance away but as you get closer it suddenly rears up steeply ahead of you in the landscape. Make it to the top and you walk through Heaven's Gate and Hell's Gate - gaps in the hill's ring fort. The hill and the surrounding area are steeped in ancient history and mythology - local tales tell of the hill being formed by rock and earth dumped off a shovel by a giant.
The hill with its steep sides skirted in dense forest has an atmosphere all of its own and if you do go down to the woods you might stumble across an ancient vast yew tree. With its brooding presence and the enveloping feel of the sentinel yews that have sprouted up from it which surround you, you can believe you are in a different world. The sound of woodpeckers pecking at trees for insects and smaller flocks of tits as they zip through the trees are accentuated, twigs snap as other wildlife wanders through.
"The space inside the yew grove, where its circular green dials rotate at a pace beyond our usual perception, belongs to a time of its own: a time between night and day, between seasons, between thought and feeling." |
