Nature - Deep Sea , New Horizon
Ìý
This week, Nature gets the chance to go on a special ocean voyage with John Ruthven when he joins the research vessel, New Horizon.
The New Horizon is a floating laboratory that can sometimes be home to the scientists for several weeks as they undertake their research expeditions.
The expedition that JohnÌýjoins is set to last 10 days. The crew will travel approximately 60 miles out to sea and trawl the San Clemente Basin , a deep underwater trench.
The San Clemente Basin is home to some extraordinary creaturesÌýthat have evolved special adaptations to survive in this vast volume of water.
John has a privileged view as some of the animals discovered in the deep ocean trawl are brought to the surface and placed in specially fitted tanks for further investigation.
New Horizon is operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California. |
