"Nature is full of surprises, so the programme can investigate fascinating and challenging areas in
our relations with the natural world without being too technical or preachy. My job is brilliant because, as a link between the listener and the subject, I can discover new information and ideas which help people make up their own minds on important issues."

A Blight On The Landscape
In this week's NATURE , Paul Evans explores the life history of this fascinating family of plant pathogens - the phytophthoras.
Different species of phytophthoras are found all around the world and have been around for a long time causing a variety of problems.
Phytophthora infestans was responsible for late potato blight which brought the devastating famine to Ireland in the 1800s.
Living amongst some of our tree species today is a disease-causing newcomer which has the potential to be quite damaging to our parks, gardens and woodlands.
Phytophthoras have been helped on their travels around the globe by the plant trade for nurseries and garden centres in Europe and the west cost of America.
These unwelcome and unworldly plant killers are taking up huge amounts of scientists' time. Their ability to spread in different forms to make use of new hosts are a result of intermarriages between family members forming hybrids.
Paul visits DEFRA and Forestry Commission research scientists as they try to discover more about these clever pathogens and how they can control them.
