The Ivory-billed Woodpecker Is Back
Grant Sonnex visits the swamp forests of Arkansas in search of a bird that was supposed to have gone extinct in 1944.
The ivory-billed woodpecker has the wingspan of a raven, the beak of a toucan and the speed of a duck.
Until last spring, if you'd said that you'd seen one, it would be much the same as claiming a sighting of Lord Lucan or Elvis Presley.
But in April some of the world's leading ornithologists put their reputations on the line by publishing a paper declaring that the ivory-bill is back and has even been caught on video.
It's thrown the nearby town of Brinkley into a woodpecker frenzy, but left local duck hunters fearing that their favourite hunting grounds will be closed down.
