An-diugh, tha sinn a’ dol a thoirt sùil air mar a fhreagras sinn a’ cheist, Ciamar a tha thu? Today, we’re going to look at how you would answer the question, Ciamar a tha thu? How are you? Ciamar a tha thu? Or, if you want to be polite, or if you’re addressing someone older, you would say, Ciamar a tha sibh? Ciamar a tha sibh?

GUTH 1 (Eilidh): Madainn mhath, a Chaluim.
GUTH 2 (Calum): Madainn mhath Eilidh, ciamar a tha thu?
GUTH 1 (Eilidh): Tha gu math, tapadh leat. Ciamar a tha sibh fhèin?
GUTH 2 (Calum): Tha mi gu dòigheil.
When asked how she was, Eilidh replied Tha gu math, tapadh leat. I am well, thank you. Tha gu math, tapadh leat. She then asked Calum how he was, and he said Tha mi gu dòigheil. I’m alright. Tha mi gu dòigheil.
Ach, dè mur nach eil sibh gu math? But, what would you say if you weren’t well? Nach toir sinn sùil air eisimpleir no dhà. Let’s have a look at some examples.
Tha mi sgìth – I’m tired. Tha mi sgìth.
Chan eil mi faireachdainn ro mhath. I’m not feeling very well. Chan eil mi faireachdainn ro mhath.
Tha an cnatan orm. I have a cold. Tha an cnatan orm.
Tha mo cheann goirt. I have a headache. Tha mo cheann goirt.
Tha mi tinn. I’m ill. Tha mi tinn.

GUTH 1 (Eilidh): Tha mi gu math a Chaluim, ciamar a tha thu fhèin?
GUTH 2 (Calum): Chan eil mi gu math, tha eagal orm
GUTH 1 (Eilidh): Dè tha ceàrr ort?
GUTH 2 (Calum): Tha an cnatan orm agus tha mo cheann goirt.
GUTH 1 (Eilidh): Tha mi duilich sin a chluinntinn!
When asked how he was, Calum said; ‘Chan eil gu math, tha eagal orm.’ I’m not well I’m afraid. ‘Chan eil gu math, tha eagal orm.’ Eilidh then asked; ‘Dè tha ceàrr ort?’ What’s wrong with you? ‘Dè tha ceàrr ort?’ To which he replied, ‘Tha an cnatan orm agus tha mo cheann goirt.’ I have a cold and a headache. ‘Tha an cnatan orm agus tha mo cheann goirt.’ And Eilidh said “tha mi duilich sin a chluinntinn!” I’m sorry to hear that! Tha mi duilich sin a chluinntinn.
