Blasad Beag – Episode 28: Cur-seachadan
Halò agus fàilte air ais gu Blasad Beag còmhla riumsa Catrìona Mhoireach. Welcome back to Blasad Beag with me, Catriona Murray.
Anns an leasan sa, bheir sinn sùil air cur-seachadan. In this lesson we’re going to learn about hobbies. Cur-seachadan. Hobbies or pastimes. Cur-seachadan.
To ask someone what their hobbies are, you would say, ’Dè na cur-seachadan a th’ agad?’ What are your hobbies? Dè na cur-seachadan a th’ agad? Or if you’re being polite, ‘Dè na cur-seachadan a th’ agaibh? What are your hobbies? Dè na cur-seachadan a th’ agaibh?
Dè na cur-seachadan a th’ agaibh-se? Seo eisimpleirean de chuid; here are some common pastimes.
A’ coimhead telebhisean. Watching television. A’ coimhead telebhisean.
A’ fighe. Knitting. A’ fighe.
A’ leughadh. Reading. A’ leughadh.
A’ còcaireachd. Cooking. A’ còcaireachd.
A’ bèicearachd. Baking. A’ bèicearachd.
Thug sinn sùil roimhe air spòrs, ach seo cuid a chur-seachadan a dhèanadh tu a-muigh. We looked previously at sports, such as ball-coise – football – ball-coise, agus rugbaidh, but here are some other outdoor pastimes:
A’ ruith. Running. A’ ruith.
A’ sreap. Climbing. A’ sreap.
A’ marcachd. Riding. A’ marcachd.
Ag obair anns a’ ghàrradh. Working in the garden, gardening. Ag obair anns a’ ghàrradh.
So, if somebody asked you what your hobbies were, how could you use this vocabulary to answer? You could use the phrase “Bidh mi a’...” Bidh mi a’... meaning that you do something. Bidh mi a’...
Bidh mi a’ leughadh – I read. Bidh mi a’ leughadh.
Bidh mi a’ ruith – I run. Bidh mi a’ ruith.
Bidh mi a’ coimhead telebhisean – I watch television. Bidh mi a’ coimhead telebhisean.
To say you like doing something, you could use the phrase “Is toigh leam a bhith...” Is toigh leam a bhith...
Is toigh leam a bhith a’ leughadh. I like reading. Is toigh leam a bhith a’ leughadh.
Is toigh leam a bhith a’ ruith. I like running. Is toigh leam a bhith a’ ruith.
Is toigh leam a bhith a’ coimhead telebhisean. I like watching television. Is toigh leam a bhith a’ coimhead telebhisean.
Ach, an dùil dè na cur-seachadan a th’ aig Eilidh agus Calum? I wonder what hobbies Eilidh and Calum have? Èistibh ris a’ chòmhradh a leanas gus faighinn a-mach. Listen to the following conversation to find out.
Guth 1 (Eilidh): Dè na cur-seachadan a th’ agad?
Guth 2 (Calum): Uill, bidh mi a’ sreap agus a’ ruith agus is toigh leam a bhith a’ còcaireachd cuideachd.
Guth 1 (Eilidh) O cha toigh leamsa a bhith a’ còcaireachd ach is toigh leam a bhith a’ bèicearachd.
Guth 1 (Calum) A bheil cur-seachadan eile agad?
Guth 2 (Eilidh) Tha, bidh mi a’ fighe agus a’ marcachd agus is toigh leam a bhith ag obair anns a’ ghàrradh cuideachd.
When asked about his hobbies, Calum said that he goes running and climbing; bidh mi a’ ruith agus a’ sreap. And did you catch the other thing he enjoys doing? Is toigh leam a bhith a’ còcaireachd cuideachd. I also enjoy cooking. Eilidh doesn’t enjoy cooking, but she does like baking – cha toigh leam a bhith a’ còcaireachd ach is toigh leam a bhith a’ bèicearachd. Remember the phrases “Is toigh leam” and “Cha toigh leam” – I like and I don’t like. “Is toigh leam” and “Cha toigh leam”. We looked at these in more detail in Series 5 and you can find the notes on our website. Now, does Eilidh have any other hobbies? Yes - she knits and goes horse-riding – bidh mi a’ fighe agus a’ marcachd – and she also enjoys gardening; is toigh leam a bhith ag obair anns a’ ghàrradh cuideachd.
