Blasad Beag – Episode 23: Locations
Halò agus fàilte gu Blasad Beag. An-diugh, tha sinn a’ dol a bhruidhinn mu àiteachan, agus mar a dh’fhaighnicheas neach càit’ a bheil cuideigin. Welcome to Blasad Beag. Today, we’re going to talk about locations, and how to ask where someone is.
To ask where someone or something is, you would start with the question “Càite a bheil...?” – where is...? or where are...? Càit’ a bheil...?
To ask someone where they are, you would say, “Càit’ a bheil thu?” Where are you? “Càit’ a bheil thu?” or “Càit’ a bheil sibh?”, if you’re being polite, or speaking to more than one person. “Càit’ a bheil sibh?” or “Càit’ a bheil thu?”
Here are a few more examples of questions using the phrase “Càit’ a bheil”.
“Càit’ a bheil i?” Where is she? “Càit’ a bheil i?”
“Càit’ a bheil e?” Where is he? “Càit’ a bheil e?”
“Càit’ a bheil iad?” Where are they? “Càit’ a bheil iad?”
“Càit’ a bheil Eilidh?” Where is Eilidh? “Càit’ a bheil Eilidh?”
Now, to answer the question, Càit' a bheil thu? You would say, “Tha mi aig…..”, followed by where you are. “Tha mi aig…” I am at. “Tha mi aig...” Mar eisimpleir, for example, “Tha mi aig an taigh.” I am at home, I’m at the house. “Tha mi aig an taigh.”
Or, you could say, “Tha mi ann an...” I am in, followed by where you are, or, “Tha mi anns an...” I am in the, again, followed by where you are. Mar eisimpleir, “Tha mi ann an Glaschu”, I am in Glasgow. “Tha mi ann an Glaschu.” Or, “Tha mi anns an ospadal”. I am in the hospital. “Tha mi anns an ospadal.”
Seo eisimpleir no dhà eile dhuibh. Here are a few more examples.
Tha mi aig an sgoil. I am at the school. Tha mi aig an sgoil.
Tha mi anns a’ bhùth. I am in the shop. Tha mi anns a’ bhùth.
Tha mi anns a’ ghàrradh. I am in the garden. Tha mi anns a’ ghàrradh.
Tha mi aig an taigh. I’m at the house, or I’m home. Tha mi aig an taigh.
Tha mi aig m’ obair. I am at work; I am at my work. Tha mi aig m’ obair.
Èistibh ris a’ chòmhradh a leanas. Listen to the following conversation, and try and figure out where both Calum and Eilidh are.
Guth 1 (Calum): Halò?
Guth 2 (Eilidh): Halò a Chaluim. Càit’ a bheil thu?
Guth 1 (Calum): Tha mi a-muigh. Tha mi anns a’ phàirce. Càit’ a bheil thu fhèin?
Guth 2 (Eilidh): Tha mi aig an taigh.
Thuirt Calum gun robh e a-muigh. Calum said he was out. A-muigh, out or outside. A-muigh. He then said, “Tha mi anns a’ phàirce.” I am in the park. “Tha mi anns a’ phàirce.” When asked where she was, Eilidh replied, “Tha mi aig an taigh.” I am at the house, or I am at home. “Tha mi aig an taigh.”
Agus sin e. That’s all for now. Mar sin leibh.
