A Peedie Night Oot
Posted: Sunday, 09 September 2007 |
Last night (Saturday) yours truly, himself, Mr and Mrs Sanday Housewife, a` went doon tae oor local pub, the Belsair, for a wee celebratory drink as himself has gotten a new job! *big smile here*
We hae a lovely local, friendly and cosy, here attached is a pic o` the landlady o` it, wi` a couple o` himself and yours truly and yours truly bein` rude and poking her tongue oot at the camera, kids, dinnae dae that, it just leads tae embarrassing photos yer parents will show a`body wha will look in later years!
Hope everybody is haein a grand weekend...I ken it looks like summer has gone (and only payed a passing nod tae oor peedie island in the first place!) but it could be worse, it could be snowing, so it`s no` a` that bad! ;-D

The Farmers Market
Posted: Sunday, 16 September 2007 |
Sanday had a Farmers Market today (Sunna`s day) so your truly and himself, wi` Mr and Mrs Sanday Housewife and the lovely lassie frae the vegetarian restaraunt a` piled in oor cars and went on up tae the school tae see what wis what.
On the stage they had a fiddle club concert in fine fettle and fu` swing, grand tae hear, it was...
And in the hall were a` manner o` stalls set up, wi` fine prime cuts o` meat that made the mooth fairly water wi` imagining the recipes ye could employ for them, wi` bright fresh vegetables, looking as they werenae half an oor oot o` the gairdens, wi` a` manner o` second hand goods and bric a brac, oh, a fine rummage yours truly had.
Mind you, me favourite stall o` the lot had tae be the lovely couple selling the maist fabulous scented candles!
Ye should hae seen me and Mrs Sanday Housewife! Drooling ower them we were....how dae they get candles tae smell like strawberries, or lilac or jasmine?! We just could hae stood there a` day just smelling the stall, but think we micht hae drawn a peedie bit attention if we had done that....
how and ever, we baith loaded up wi` bonny scented candles, proper girly shopping that was, added tae the fine meat and vegetables (locally produced and grown and ye`ll no` find fresher or fairer ony whar) we`d a grand day oot.
So we cam hame, expecting tae be able tae get the bows oot...wi` a` the rain we hae had ower the past wee while, we`ve no` been able tae shoot and yours truly is haein withdrawal symptoms...*sniffle*...
and o` course, wid ye ken it...it started tae chuck it doon...somebody up thar doesnae like me....*glares upward*
Mind you, haein indulged in a wee drop o` the guid stuff the nicht afore at oor local hostelry, the Belsair, again, mebbe it was a guid job I couldnae shoot...the car micht no` hae survived.....
Oor peedie clutch o` this years chickens, noo almost grown birds, hae developed the habit o` perching on the window sill. Doesnae matter how often we shift the wee bug..erm...beasties...they will chust come back roond again and sit there, looking in, trying to look pathetic and like we dinnae ever feed them!
Which we dae, of course! Fine wee fat things they are indeed.
But they also noo` hae taken tae attacking ony visitors that get too close tae them. Mrs Sanday Housewife, trying tae escape back tae her car, tried tae lift one o` them safely oot o` the way after it had tried tae peck her shoelaces off...and the divil pecked her hand!
So ony solutions tae how tae discourage the hens frae window sitting gratefully received thanking you in anticipation.
Short o` cruelty o` course, or indeed eating them, for I want mair hens off them next year....
oh, afore I forget...tae the candle sellers, chust drop up onytime when the winds arenae howling for an archery lesson. I`m no` a` that bad, honest! :-D

Wild Sanday Weekends..
Posted: Sunday, 23 September 2007 |
Well, mildly wild, that is..aw ok, no` really that wild, but damn good fun a` the same.
Went out Friday night with Mr and Mrs Sanday Housewife, to our local, the Belsair, the landlord and landlady must be saints tae put up wi` yours truly...
no` that I embarrass meself when slightly (and I mean, slightly btw) under the influence of their excellent beer...but I do laugh. A lot. One of lifes great gigglers, me....*blushes*
ahem..so we had a grand night playing table Jenga which yours truly hadnae played afore..that game is fun an` all.....mak`s a grand clatter when it a` fa`s doon...*grins*
and then we a` went back doon the next again night....
Noo, ah`m no` wanting onybody tae think I am some kind o` drunken wanton beastie o a woman, for I`m no`...
but it has been a grand weekend oot. Wi` sincere thanks tae oor local`s landlady wha has tae put up wi` the maist raucous stories and jokes....*blushes again*
Onyway, hoping a` body else has had a good weekend tae, and that the sometime dodgy weather didnae dampen spirits.
And ah`m pretty sure that by doon soother standards, oor wild Sanday weekend was almost womens institute material.....*wink*

Chickens and Weather and Stuff.

The peedie chooks wha persist in sitting on the window ledge are still doing it. I gie up. They can keep on doing it. For when ye try tae shift them the wee buggers try tae tak a chunk oot yer fingers. Tsk.
They also hae begun tae think they are hoose hens. Each time the front door opens they dash in and park themselves in the porch and refuse tae be budged, making a beeline for the cat food.
Oot o the four o them, one is a cockerel and the rest are hens. And of course it`s the cockerel wha is causing the maist hassle. Pause here while I insert the words "tsk, typical bloke" please....
Onyway, noo I am eyeing them up for the pot. Think they ken it tae, for they`re getting harder tae catch.
Me geese, noo roond the front o the hoose, are happy there, but I hae noticed a deal o difference in this years wild geese on the island. For there are hardly ony.
Throughout previous years, huge flocks o wild geese would come here, the fields and skies would be thick wi them, and a night lang ye could hear their chattering honks a aroond the hoose.
But this year? A couple o wee flocks and that has been it.
So whar normally at this time o year the skies would hae mony o the V shaped flights o wild geese, I hae seen only one or twa. For some reason I find that quite sad, for I like the sound o wild geese calling, and like tae see them fill the skies as they get ready tae fly off to wharever they go.
When that happened afore, me ain geese would stand at the fences tae the fields and watch their cousins fly off, as if they were remembering what it was like, tae be wild.
Nane o that this year tho. Wonder why?
So me ain geese just get fat on grain and keep the grass doon roond the front, and leave the lawn peppered with their cast off white feathers and down, like a smooring o snow ower green.
At least, though, the weather is behaving itself for noo. Lang may it last! For am hoping tae gaun oot wi Mr and Mrs Sanday Hoosewife this weekend tae shoot.
Hae discovered it is nae guid firing arrows in a strong wind ye see. They are mair liable tae end up on Stronsay if ye dae...
So fingers crossed the wind keeps doon, if it does I`ll tak pictures tae inflict on you guid folks. *evil grin*
Hae a guid day a`body.

Saturday
Posted: Sunday, 30 September 2007 |
Ye ken, ye get the worst weather at times, living on a peedie lump o rock in the North Sea. Gales, sleet, hail, rain that comes at ye sideways..and that`s chust the summers!
And it can be a wee bit depressing sometimes when the boats are cancelled again for it, or when ye have tae go and rescue your washing frae being eaten by the sheep in the next field.
But then a day like Saturday comes along and mak`s ye realise chust how damn lucky we are, living here.
For it was a richt bonny day, a day o glorious sun and even a little heat, nae wind, peaceful and just a fine, grand kind o day tae be ootdoors.
So yours truly stood oot and watched the sun set ower the fields and sea and fair sighed wi contentment.
Whenever I get tae feeling doon (which doesnae happen often mind you) I chust gaun ootside on sic a day and the fading rose light o the sun ower the darkening landscape puts everything intae perspective and so, I can gaun back indoors feeling a guid sicht mair refreshed. A bonny day, Saturday was.
I took some pics as weel, one o them o a wheen o hides on frames, for tae show I`m no always slacking off at archery! And one looking doon oor track, me digicam isnae the best so didnae really dae a guid job o capturing the licht but it was sic a fine, broad, beautiful sky I couldnae leave it unrecorded.
Hope everyone else is haeing a fine weekend tae. :-)
