North Ronaldsay is the most remote of Orkney's North Isles. Some have described the island as a place where old traditions prevail. Orcadian surnames are more dominant and the custom of communal sheep grazing on the seashore is still pursued.
The islands isolation has meant natural resources are highly valued, and seaweed was used for hundreds of years as was the kelp industry.
