I reckon you should be co-opted onto the fank crew. Heaven has to be a new crew of men waiting at the door.

My wife and I were very interested in your description of the Up whatever. Sounds like fun, particularly if you like dancing, drinking ....and taking supper all night long. How is Aa pronounced? as in "bah"? How different is the Up in Lerwick different from that in Unst, and when are they both scheduled to take place in 07? Also, when Shetlanders have partaken too much of alcohol, do they get violently riotous, or mope and cry, or sing (off key?) loudly like the Glaswegians?

Unst Up Helly Aa is better. That's the main difference. And women can join in too, so we're a bit ahead o the game here. Ours are always in February, and we have 2, so that's anidder wye we're better! But all the different areas o Shetland have their own Up Helly Aa's, but some are called Fire Festivals. And just for the record, we're MUCH more refined than Glaswegians. ps. You're right wi the pronunciation - Aa as in Bah.

TIme for Scallowawife to post some new stuff. Did you see the nice photos Far North posted recently about their Up Helly Aa? Any documentation of the January Lerwick Up riot?

Friend and I travelled to Shetland Islands for our first Up Helly Aa in January. We had an absolutely wonderful time though didn't last all night - are we wimps? Will be back in 2007 for another dose and maybe this time we will see the dawn. By the way we went to the TA hall and were most impressed by the hostesses - everyone made us feel really welcome and we even had a dance. Maggie fae Dundee
