Orkney Cat feeling homesick

I need help from the Islandblogging cat-loving population.

Poor MC came in from a midnight wanderings with a bloody mouth.

At first I assumed he had an altrication with another feline, but a visit to the V-E-T has shown he also has broken a tooth. He thinks he might have been hit by a car. His claws (MC, not the VET) are somewhat worn at the ends, and said-vet suggests an x-ray or two in the next week to check for ribcage injuries.

He's under medication, but getting up and around now and then, and has had something to eat (a nice bit of tuna - to suck), but I'm wondering...

What might have happened and whether it would be better to have the damaged tooth removed or leave it it - Vet says possible future infections may ensue.

I gave MC a cuddle from you all but he's mumbling about the wide-open fields of Orkney, despite his gallant rattings last week.

Comments I've also just realised his top tooth is missing, probably where all the blood on his mouth has come from. The plot thins...

och the poor cat! I hope he improves soonest, meself, I would hae had the tooth removed, we`d a dog that had a similar thing once and left the tooth in, and true to form it did give an awful lot o` trouble later on and have tae be removed. Best o` luck to the cat anyways.

Hermit from Sanday

more details needed: what tooth? an important fang one? what age is the cat? why are the claws worn?

scallowawife from shetland

poor pussy_if i were you(well i'm not) i'd get his tooth out,but if the vet say's it won't nod off DO NOT LET THEM GIVE IT TOO MUCH GAS! remember what happened to my gertrude

carol from baskinginthesun

Yes, scallowawife, I'm afraid it was the big important ones on his right-paw side of his mouth. .............. I'm beginning to wonder if someone had a go at him when he was snarling at them. It would have been a mighty fine blow to knock them out..... he swears he wasn't drunk - but perhaps the family of his rat-pickings from last week have come back with avengence. :-(

MadLamb from Mopping brow

I think British vets must be more sensible than French ones. None of the Rolling Acres cats were ever given too much anasthetic! Get the tooth out and avoid infection MC. You'll manage fine without it, being a resourceful feline. One of the Old Cats argued with a car in IOM and had a wired-up lower and upper jaw for two weeks, with which she travelled up to Orkney. Then lived to be 16. I'm a bit surprised the v.e.t. didn't x-ray anyway as a just-in-case. *BIG PURRY HUGS TO MC*

Flying Cat from in sympathy

Dear, dear, we have better begin asking folks whether they have alibis, and check on motives. How about you, TWS? Hyper-B.? Moo in the night between vespers and matins? It's probably not Bigheid, but Nic from Coll could have flown over and back before anyone noticed his absence. Of course Herr Barebraes has a hammer, but no motive. There is Murdo John, always unpredictable. Then, there is FC - flies in the dark, and may have mistaken MC for someone/something else. All I know is: I plead innocent. More importantly, all the best to MC, even though it's a cat and I may live to regret it.

mjc from NM,USA

poor thing, with his claws being scuffed it does sound like a car hit although could also be a boot strike from one of the horrible humans out there in the world who don't like cats(happened to one of mine in the past) or even from a new mum with a lamb to protect?? I'd get the tooth removed at the same time as the x-rays are done if they are done under sedation as like hermit have had a pet with a broken tooth that caused problems later. Hope he's ok....

tanith from lewis

If at the vet, I do suggest laughing gas. That should be a riot, particularly if as a consequence the cat starts channeling (let your imagination do the rest!)....

mjc from NM,USA

I've broken two of my teeth since Christmas. Mr Price's mobile dental van is no more so there is no dental treatment on Coll, and no vet either. What should I do?

Nic from avoiding the dentist

Apparently when a cat gets hit by a car it tries to grip the road with it's claws, hence the broken claws. That's what I was told by a vet once anyway.

Orkney Cat Lover from There's a clue in the name!

Scallowawife - cats claws get worn when they try to dig their claws into the road surface in an effort not to be dragged/flung by the car running them over.

Rachondarox from Lancs

Poor MC, hope he gets better soon. The worn claws are apparently the sign of being hit by a car, as they scrape on a hard surface such as the road. Personally I would have the tooth removed, but perhaps best to wait until he's a bit stronger and recovered. Hugs from me.

Jill from EK

how is the cat now??

carol from the usual place

Carol: am I mistaking (in your question) a lugubrious tone for a hopeful one?

mjc from NM,USA

mjc:no i really was worried for the cat but i see on madlambs new blog he is getting better

carol from with sore ankle, after crash

mjc was doing awfully well in the cat-sympathising-with stakes until that last comment, which strikes me as a teensy weensy bit ambiguous.....

Flying Cat from ever such a hard stare

How on earth did you break two teeth, Nic?! Not from chewing on venison, I hope? Some crabs got fed up and grabbed two willy-nilly and would not let go? Go ahead, and share the details of your misfortunes with us!!

mjc from NM,USA

It might just have been an average Saturday night on Coll, mjc...
