CommentsWhat Westray product can compare with Charlie Barley's products from far Stornaway? Tell us all about it! # Barking mad in places, Madlamb? Where? Do take life in your own hands and tell us! Lewis? Jura? oh yes, mainland Orkney?
mjc from NM,USA
Westray's bakery does a fine range, including a fine Fruit Malt Loaf that I am pining for daily. ......There's the illict fattie-cutties (a flat scone - to die for) and all the things you can only buy at Sale of work (jam combinations that flip your brain).....Okay it's sugary-things and not animal innards, but hey there's no specialist butcher on Westray, just imports from Mainland..... just made me think of Beef Olives. MMM I wonder who I could contact to ask for some...FC?
Mad Lamb from under the rug
Wholemeal bread from Brown's....mmm oh wait a minute, I'm a cat, I don't like bread. Sorry. Just spent rather a long time with Tws and something rubbed off. Beef olives? Weeeeell, only if they are NOT stuffed with oatmeal. Is MC not speaking to me any more? *wrinkled brow*

Why is madlamb wearing a wig? I think we should be told....

Hi FC - I've not been ignoring you just trying to hide from the m/fpus - you know what they're like. They just get me settled and a room to myself, nice chair and single bed (all mine!!) - okay so there were a few (okay lots) of boxes in there too, but NOW they're moving the whole house upside down - apparently have to make room for visitors downstairs, and move the office upstairs.......WELL the books - what on earth do these humans need with books - good purr and a shakedy of the collar bell and I can get all I want from life, thank you very much......and the words that came from herself yesterday suggests things aren't going as well as planned. ...Though I did hear mutterings of new car and hoovering out the old...another change in my simple life. Have they no heart?........When things settle, I'll give you an update.....apparently I'm off to Edinburgh for a rabbit-hunting holiday in August, can't wait - only caught a single wirey little mouse here so far - pah!! ......As for the wig, truth be known it's been like that for a while - part of the reason of moving from Orkney she wuz feart that the wind would take it away, although I think the rug reference was due to trying to pretend she was still in Westray for IBHQ purposes. ...............all the best, MC
MC from Rumour Corner
New car?! Are you getting a new travel box as well? # Hoovering the old, and pretending it's barely used (the odometer is not a reliable witness to how little this car has been used, eh?!)? # Edinburgh, eh? For the big shindig again? # Books: someone asked me recently (and he was not the first) whether I have read all my books. The idea. I only have one life!! Do people ask gardeners whether they go and sniff all their flowers?!! In any case, somebody has got to buy books!!

I remembered in the night that Westray also has crab meat, if you like that sort of thing. Lobsters are exported to Spain, so they must be good....Fish is also prepared by local hands for sale all over Orkney - delivered on Fridays... The brain's not as good as it used to be (no comments from the back!!!)
Mad Lamb from South of Westray
Okay mjc here's the deal. You buy all the books in the US and I'll buy all the books in UK.
Hyper-Borean from A la bibliothèque
A deal, provided you fork out for the shelves. What say you? I would send you digi photos to supplement the bill: just to reassure you everything is on the up and up (as if you would doubt!).
mjc from NM,USA
oy, wait a mo', you two can't buy all the books, what about me, or do I have to drag myself off to Canada again? (not that much dragging would be involved!)
jas from on the bookcase
Take a deep breath, Jas. I assume Hyper-B is (deep down) reasonable. What we were talking was one of each hardback/cloth title (two in case the writing is wonderful, the binding and stitching reliable, and the price right - say, under five shillings), not the whole caboodle. ( I am not a lobbyist trying to curry favor with a senator who wants to flog his remainder-land books). There will be plenty left for you, sonny. P.S. would you be interested in a somewhat leaky Coleman aluminum paddle canoe? If so, step forward (I have only one - at any one time).
mjc from NM,USA
We've a Coleman Lamp - is it the same Coleman? I'll tactfully leave the 'sonny' bit to mia's ma....
Flying Cat from cupboard under the sink
It is the same Coleman. # I will be tactful next time, FC. At times I forget my manners when I don the hat of the Beverly Hillbilly patriarch. # No offence meant Jas. You come on over, we'll dust the books together, and spin yarns (metaphorically, FC, metaphorically).
mjc from NM,USA
mjc wash your keyboard out with soap. (deep down) reasonable! I'm 100% through and through reasonable, except......
Hyper-Borean from Sweet reason
dust? what strange activity is this? I can find a spinning wheel if you don't want to be just metaphorical...
jas from not even remotely a housewife
Of course you are eminently reasonable Hyper-B.: after all, you tend to dogs rather than c.a.t.s. (eh? eh!! Any more full stops and the car will stall!). Someone in the mainland has fourteen cats (all snipped as per standing orders of Citoyen Robespierre, we fervently hope). I can't even imagine owning fourteen dogs, much less ... I understand you have more than a handful of canines, Hyper-B.: surely you don't have a line of canoes tied together when you go out riding the waves with your hounds toward Stromness or wherever. Oh, they SWIM after you, like those imprinted birds following ultra lights down south to new wintering grounds. I would like to see Moo's cats swim the Hoy Sound (is that what it is called?). They can't: that's why at least one has taken to flying!!
mjc from NM,USA
Dogs mjc, not in Hyperborea, did have 2 canoes and 2 ancient dighies for a while until higher authority explained that one boat is reasonable. Now as to swimming cats, there is a breed called Lake Van Cats which originate from Eastern Turkey they swim and reportedly like it. I believe their toes have rudimentary webs. Coming from close proximity to Mt. Ararat I wonder if the famous stranding has any bearing on this mutation. I also used to know a yachtie, who revelled in the soubriquet "Margo from Chicago," She had a cat which would swim around the boat on return to port. whether from her choice or the cat's I never did figure out.
Hyper-Borean from Cave (no canem)
You have a direct connection to a Higher Authority Hyper? *respec'*
Flying Cat from an admiring glance
Interesting about the Lake Van Cats: I shall have to look more into it. Peshmerga cats, doubtless. I expect Margo from Chicago's cat was simply a freak of nature (i.e. a Heinz 51 which somehow learnt to swim).
mjc from NM,USA
Those peshmerga naans are explosive stuff!
Flying Cat from Ristorante A*i B**a
Can anyone tell me whether Malcolm Stout still runs "The Manse" on Westray. We stayed there some years ago and have never forgotten it. Malcolms relative caught the seafood that we ate - it was fab. I was recommending this to a friend, but can't seem to locate it on any tourist accommodation sites. Sorry this doesn't have anything to do with cats or lambs!!
Julia Stubbs from Basildon Essex
I love Orkney - it gets better the further north you go! Been to Orkney 3 times. Love it, love it, love it! I can't believe the prices of property there. Perhaps someday I'll get myself there again. Thanks for the blog ...keep up the good work.

westray is a fine place on the face of things, unfortunately there is an element of, you are dammed if you do and dammed if you dont, woe-betide if you are just trying to live your life in your own way, some of the locals dont like that. we have heard tales of many a incomer being frightened away, gossip is a terrible thing on a small island.
