Pretty Lights

Valentines Night, a night for lovers.

Mr B and myself had an early bath put a dvd on the pc and settled down for a quiet night. The DVD was average and the snoring of the dog set the scene a treat.

At 8.30 we received a call from a kindly neighbour who lives at the North End of the island informing us of the likelyhood of "The Northern Lights or Merry Dancers"

I have seen these once when we were in Cananda, at the end of a logging track in Revelstoke we camped for 2 nights in our winnebago (dubious spelling) under the starry skies with a bonfire made of some of the logs the loggers had left behind. It was truly romantic and we sat there for hours watching the lights dance across the sky. Unfortunately the lights were only white light and not the multi coloured stuff I had dreamed of seeing one day.

Well armed with this information I got all excited and decided to tke a look out the door. The stars were covering the skies and it was so clear and still that it didn't feel that cold seeings as I was standing in just me nightie and dressing gown.
Mr B followed and suggested that we took a walk up the track to the top of the brae as we would have a better view. We stumbled along the track in the dark and stood to watch. There were a few ripples that looked like searchlights , but the lights from the barns and outbuildings along the north road made it difficult to see it properly.

"Maybe we should go to Ness in the car " I suggested,

So we donned coats wooly hats and wellies over our night gear and drove down the road to Ness.

Standing at Ness with the stars the sea crashing onto the beach and the camera at the ready we waited.

Mr Bs legs were getting cold as he forgot in his hurry to pull on a pair of trousers but we waited.

Unfortunately the lights were absent, but this didnt spoil the moment and we felt that the evening had best been spent staring at the skies than sitting indoors listening to the dog snore.

On the way back we were ambushed by 2 rabbits running across the road and one decided to head but the car tyre and became brown bread. I gave Mr B a hard time for killing the rabbit as its partner got away and would undoubtidly be heartbroken at the loss of its soul mate on valentines night.

Mr B was unrepentant

I seem to have left off the caption to the picture: Anyone Help ?

No need for caption. Let me guess: cupid? You mean you did not take Hooch with you to see the lights? I would not be surprised if the ASPCA were to pay you a visit soon. Valentine's day was spent here alone heating up frozen coq au vin and eating it by myself. Did not even bother to do a salad. Wife had gone for a conference in Chicago last Saturday, was unable to proceed to Washington DC on Tuesday as planned when both Chicago and Washington DC airports closed down, decided to come home yesterday via Dallas (getting up at 3 am to catch the 6.30 am plane), then got stranded in Dallas (Albuquerque had shut down because of unexpected heavy snow), was lucky enough to find room at another Westin near the airport, but should be home today (if I can get the driveway cleaned up and get the car to the airport). Prices of flowers coming down today, like the price of chocolate after Easter. Good to hear that you had a good time, Barebraes, even though it was a wild goose chase.

Wait a mo'...it'll come to me in a minute....oh bother, who DOES he remind me of? I've got it! It's Harpo Marx as Cupid with his wee bow. But where are his arrows? Can a man really send a dart to the heart with such a small weapon? Harpo was the one who never spoke.......mmmmmmrrrp.

Flying Cat from game for a guess

How about 'If you think this is scary, you oughta see my Fireman's outfit!' ;-p

The single arrow is all strung up. Whoever gets hit my the arrow comes to a sticky end. # I did that kind of arrow shooting against window panes years ago when I was growing up on an overpopulated island: the skills came in handy when I got to the States and moved out to the south west.

I thought it was the statue of liberty ( well maybe I got the liberty bit right ). I've seen the "Northern Lights" several times myself, and it is still a wonderful sight every time.

He's not taking part in an Unst Up Helly Aa' squad is he?

Muness from Fetlar

s! ad for you that you missed the lights,i've seen them a few times and each time brought tears to my eyes they are so beautiful

Is this the 'Angel of the North' that arty types go on about? I thought it was somewhere near Gateshead in NE England but perhaps its been lent out to Shapinsay as part of the Highland Year of Culture?

Annie B from the usual

Mr. B. is from Dartford, and more likely than not he is from solid Angle, Saxon or Norman stock, perhaps with a dash of Roman (he has some romantic inklings). Don't think Barebraes would put up with marauding Vikings.

If he's the Angel of T'North I can only congratulate mrs barebraes on having scrubbed him up so nice! Not a speck of rust anywhere....at least not anywhere we can see...

Flying Cat from an admiring glance

Thats because he gets oiled occasionally, I have heard that Olive oil is the best but we cant afford that so I use old engine oil

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Well it brings his naturally glowing skin up lovely...and the teacosy is a nice homely touch!

Another nice posting to welcome March (the Ides or whatever), Barebraes?

Are you okay, Barebraes? Haven't heard from you anywhere. I assume you would have told us if you planned to be on travel mode. Take good care.

mjc from NM,USA
