Little White Balls

I took this picture after a hail storm

Looks just like the day one of my children burst their bean bag. The mess it made caused all sorts of havoc, static polystyrene beads stuck all over our clothes the hoover and every surface it came into contact with

That's the advantage hailstones have over polystyrene beads, they melt.

Little White Balls. Wasn't that one of Tommy Steele's big hits last century?

Flying Cat from ancient music compendium

Disappointed they are not egg-sized. No mama Wyandotte or Rhode Island Red would own to such. A quail might. But quails are so puny: it requires three quail breasts, just as it does three well stewed squirrels, to make an entree ... and then the fancy cooks still have to add Belgian endive and a few snips of bok choy to prevent starvation.

Look what fell from betweenn the pages of an ancient Pacific Islands Cookbook yesterday - Louisiana Creole Squirrel: servings: 4 : 1 cleaned squirrel (3lb); 1tsp salt; 1tsp balck pepper; 1/2 tsp cayenne; 1/4 onion, chopped; 3 cloves garlic, minced; 2 tbsp white wine vinegar; 1tsp browning sauce; 1 can mushrooms, drained; 1 tbsp butter or margarine, melted; 1 tbsp parsley, minced; 2 tbsp green bell pepper, minced; 2 tbsp green onion, chopped; 2/3 cup white wine, dry. 1. Dry squirrel and place in bowl. 2. Combine salt, pepper, cayenne, onion, garlic and vinegar; pour over squirrel, turning to coat. 3. Cover bowl and marinade overnight in fridge. 4. Transfer squirrel and marinade to well-greased baking dish. 5. Bake in pre-heated oven at 450F one hour. 6. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over squirrel. 7. Bake 30 to 45 minutes longer, until squirrel is fork-tender. I'm kind of taking it for granted the squirrel is already dead and without it's fur.....It might fit quite neatly on the same menu as the Lewis cormorant.

Are you sure your cavity wall insulation isn't leaking oot?

Muness from Fetlar

Cavity walls what are they ours are 3 foot thick and the wind blows through em

Barebraes from Shapinsay

McCavity Walls is a Westside cat. I suppose he could be described as insulation...

Sounds like a rather over-elaborate recipe for something so humble as the grey squirrel! What would you all do it possum or coon was on offer? The mid-western way of doing squirrel is boil, and boil: hard boiling does the trick on anything (the pressure cooker is for sissies). # Have a good weekend, y'all. Dream of the table of Ali Baba!!

Who knows, folks: yours truly may find himself in the thick of squirrel hunting country within a year or two. We just offered to purchase 20 acres of land, including an original (with enlargement) arts and crafts cottage, and 1200+ feet of navigable river frontage (can be paddled all the way to the Ohio River, Hyper-B.). Rather large detached garage for tractor, truck and other gizmos necessary for maintenance etc. Will be turned into a mini arboretum, with several discrete gardens (including a veggie one for yours truly - yellow tomatoes, fresh okras, patti pan squash, and berries galore! yummy!!), all for fun and recreation. I plan to have some chickens (both wife and I had them when we were children). Wife vetoed the idea (mine) of having an Ayrshire or any other milking cow. It is located in the small village where wife grew up (and wife's parents plus some siblings reside), and the unexpected opportunity came up on New Year's Day. The property has sewer, central water, gas, garbage pick up, satellite high speed connections - and land! - all within the village (somewhat less than 1000 inhabitants, not including quadrupeds) boundaries. Commuting distance from Louisville, KY. Reasonably priced. The lawyers are doing the paperwork, and we are keeping our fingers crossed. For the moment, assuming negotiations are successful, it will be a second home, but we may move there in a year or two. So, anyone wanting to have hospitality shown them in NM has better hurry up.

Just so long as you don't take your love for a little walk mjc.

Hyper-Borean from Folkies corner

Sounds like Heaven mjc, when you say 2nd home would you only be residing there on Holidays ?

Barebraes from Shapinsay

your little white balls remind me more of pebble dash or should that be snow dash!, but re squirrel stew, someone on Sanday has a recipe for guinea pigs! caused sone stir when put into a school newspaper. but then there was also the swan issue......................

Bet polystyrene beads would be very useful in an arts and crafts cottage, alongside the scissors, paper, paint and glue. Does Sunny from Arran live in a house like that?

Annie B from the usual

Barebraes, we would move to southern Indiana for good in a year or so, if negotiations succeed. Until then, relatives will take care of the property upkeep. It was such an unexpected opportunity we could not let it pass.

mjc from NM,USA

Well lets hope that negotiations go well and then you can eat your own chickens instead of licking your lips at mine haha

Barebraes from Shapinsay

I doubt mine will be organic, as yours doubtless are, though they might be free ranging (in moderation). Don't plan to have ducks unfortunately (past experience with them), and I was hoping you ...
