Haggis and Clapshot

The annual Royal Lifeboat Guilds Burns Night Supper and Ceiledh was held in the Community Centre on Saturday night and all that attendended were treated to a mixture of dance music and tradition from a wide spectrum of people.

The Shapinsay School children entertained us with poems dance and a rendition of 'a whim away' The Wood family performed music and traditional dancing. Counsellor Sinclair was compere and The Shapinsay Sound and the Music Group and Jennifer Ridley played for us.

The Piper preceeded the Haggis and Robbie Burns poem was read and Haggis was addressed and attacked with great passion.

We all tucked into Haggis Clapshot and mince. Then the local band struck up for the Gay Gordons , The dashing White Sargeant and young and old danced the night away.

In all a very enjoyable evening was had by all.

I could use some nice mince right now. That's one thing that does not seem to exist in New Mexico, alas. Good to learn that you had a grand time. Tell me, are veggies and/or salads served with clapshot and haggis?

Dio mio there he goes again suggesting salad with haggis and clapshot it's like a 5th column in here I can't keep up there's only one of me to defend the sacred habits of the Scots what is ground beef if not mince? *gasp*

No mjc just haggis and clapshot no salad and no additional veggies. The neeps are mashed with butter and pepper and mixed with the mashed tatties to form Clapshot. Personally I prefer the neeps without the tatties but thats a Southern thing I think.

to mjc:- i hope not

No veggies,no salad with clapshot and haggis. I am surprised there is any Scot left! Anyway, I expect the drinks help the medicine go down ...

FC: I was thinking of dessert mince (mince pie), not meatloaf mince. Which one did they serve at the shindig, Barebraes? # I have always thought "clapshot" was a very expressive name! It probably tastes alright also. Do the islanders only serve it with haggis, or just about any time?

mjc from NM,USA

"clapshot"is very good only when i was living in scotland my gran served the tatties and neeps side by side, not all mashed together, but pure heaven to the taste buds

Meat type Mince mjc not fruit type. Clapshot is an anytime type of food not just on Haggis night. We had cake for Pudding. I think the Whisky with the haggis is the pudding thingy tho!!

Barebraes from Shapinsay

If they ain't mixed together with butter, s&p and nutmeg, then it ain't clapshot!
