Mor Stein on a Windy Morn

Friday 29th December

The weather had been forecast for severe winds lasting all Friday and back again on Sunday. From early Friday morning the wind began increasing and by the time I had to go to work we had already lost a sheet of felt from the roof. Mr B attempts to secure extra batons on the roof halted the onslaught and by the time I returned from work the top sheet of felt was in tatters.

We laid in bed all Friday evening running into Saturday morning wondering what would be left of the roof. The wind sounded so bad that you could feel the walls shaking from inside the bedroom and the drone of the howling wind made me bury my head under the duvet and put my fingers in my ears.

Morning broke and the wind had subsided enough for us to realise that a further 2 sheets of felt were hanging from the roof and there were small peices of felt attached to various fences. All in all I think we got off lightly even though at the time it felt like the end of the world. At least it was only the felt we were having to replace.

Footnote ..... more batons required next time !!!!!

I took the Hooch monster up to Mor Stein to watch the sea battering the coast, we could see the waves crashing over the rocks from the house. Hooch was rather interested in the Huge Standing Stone that is called Mor Stein. I wonder if he thought it was a good place to cock his leg?

Well Off to Kirkwall soon to purchase more felt and back up the ladder to finish the job again.

You cant defy the weather.

Just be careful.

Admirable fortitude in the face of adversity! (I think it may be battens, but wouldn't like to argue with the chainsaw-wielding ........ er......... person.) I might send bipeds over on the ferry in the spring (whenever that is) to admire the no longer golden dome of Ward Hill.

Flying Cat from Orkney Mainland

Thankyou Fc I have trouble with conducting an orchestra and building a roof, maybe I should stick to the kitchen. Look forward to a visit from the bipeds tooo

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Hi OTOWH. I wonder if you could explain what the picture is of in your peedie 'About' section? My daughter and me have been trying to figure it oot. At first we thought chocolate ice cream, then maybe what happens to chocolate ice cream after it has done it's journey through the body, then finally we think we could see roast dog. Could you enlighten us please?

Ruthodanort from Unst

Awww poor Hooch-Monster! A clearer pic of the famous slobbering beast is on the June archive :-)

The Daughter from Gusty Southend

Hi Ruthodanort. You and your daughter can see a large pic of the Hooch Monster on a previous blog under June archives . Hes a French Mastiff and loves the snow. Flying Cat can tell you how menacing he is (but to be truthful hes a big softie really) Maybe I will put a few more pics of Hooch on his very own blog entry we have plenty cats with thier own blogs dont we FC.

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Never too many catblogs barebraes, but sometimes too many dogblogs. But they've no staying power, paw things......

Flying Cat from Cheshire Grin

The slobbering is bearable, but then those mastiffs instead of shaking their heads violently, with consequences too horrid to mention.

mjc from NM,USA

"the mastiffs INSIST ON shaking their heads ...". Something is wrong with the keyboard, or, more probably, my brains: I should have coffee before checking the blogs ...

mjc from NM,USA

May I, Barebraes? I have been just dying (must be the innocent child in me, very pee wee) to say that the stein could indeed use mohr company. Ah, thank you: I got it (the stein of course) off my chest. FC chops off Brodgar, leaving the impression of a denuded Stonenge instead of the Ring in its glory. And now, it's you with a forlorn piece of a rock. Sometimes I despair of island folk (quadrupeds and bipeds alike). Thank heavens I still wander in the desert.

mjc from NM,USA

just so long as you don't get too Old Testamentarian in your desert wanderings, mjc! We've had the discussions about bearded wonders...

mia from purrondering in front of a fire

Mjc Maybe I am being a bit thick here but there is only One stone there and I havn't chopped anything off as far as I know. (Afterthought maybe a chainsaw for a birthday pressie could sort that out )

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Barebraes: it's FC who chopped off Brodgar (as per her recent pictures). I never said you cut off anything. The one stone does look awfully lonely, and Hooch could use more variety. Being a mastiff, he probably feels fire hydrants (do you have to go to Kirkwall or Stromness to find one?) are too puny for his needs. And, when you do go to Kirkwall, do keep him away from THE tree.

mjc from NM,USA

Apologies mjc it all falls into place now. Hooch gets sea sick so we dont take him on the boat often. He associates the ferry with the vets unfortunately and shakes all the way across. Poor Dog !! Most of the hydrants are below ground unfortunately.

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Excuse me, mjc, but may I remind you I have been neutered not transexualised! I particularly like the two-fingered image of Brodgar because...........ahhhh leave 'em guessing! I'm quite jealous of mia's fire. Being all-electric myself.

Flying Cat from not at the v.e.t.

the choices I have, gas fires, wood stove in the greenhouse, thick fleeces on the bed, I do like my staff.

mia from apartment living

Hello Mia: I am glad that the Warden at the home for assisted living is so nice. # Must be holiday withdrawal syndrome. I feel grumpy. Watch out bloggers!!

mjc from NM,USA

I'd like your staff too.........Staff Swop, the new reality telly show!

Flying Cat from The Sunroom of Eternity

Anyone knows about spigot jiggling? A short answer will do (I don't want to use up too quickly any grey cells I may have). I could ask at the source (Moo in ... "New Hobbies"), but I am afraid I would end up with an Alaska size treatise, and I am just a poor country boy hardscrabbling in the desert ...

mjc from NM,USA

ooh I don't know FC, I don't see the female staff transplanting that well to an island setting - tho it would make for good telly ratings watching her realise just how far it is to the nearest book shop or sweetie shop!

mia from urban garden (windy!)

Oh well, ooh weeel: let's have another posting, Barebraes. If it is a picture of Hooch on the roof with a hammer, I promise to call the National Guard!

mjc from NM,USA

mia: maybe your bipeds could take to jogging to the bookstore. Sure, the distance is the same, but they might save time, if not money. Maybe you could tag along,or do you not have the endurance of well trained labs? Just enquiring.

mjc from NM,USA

Windy? I use ear plugs when Heathcliffe and Cathy are howling round t'house!

freerange from t'pennines

Spigot-jiggling is what mpu was forever remonstrating with babybipeds about. Something to do with the loo floor............... You can always tell when a house has an all-female composition. There are carpets in odd places.

Flying Cat from Cheshire Grin

mjc - jogging, my staff? excuse me while I hide a grin behind my paw. As for me tagging along, I'm a cat - I'm not that silly!

mia from looking quizzical
