Petrol Supply to the Island

The island has a fresh concern these days, that is how petrol will come to the island after the end of this year.

After decades of great service from Gunn's in Appin, Duncan has indicated that due to new legislation on petrol tanks, their upkeep etc, he is no longer going to be a "petrol garage" from the New Year.

As a result of this, the island is now trying to accumulate a whole host of ideas as to how we can get our petrol supplied.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Jane,
Sorry to see such a serious fuel problem. Any islander would be likewise concerned in similar circumstances.
To begin with, life on the island without petrol is going to be unbearable and with regard to the new legislation the situation looks exceedingly difficult.
I can't possibly suggest any way of having fuel supplies without adhereing to the new rules and being sure of futture supplies even if this costs you more.
Island living can be costly at best and fuel is always dearer.
I hope that you can get a solution soon. Please keep us in touch.
IW.

It sounds like your problem isn't rules, its the cost of the changes. This may be a dumb suggestion Jane but Glensanda super quarry is just across the water from you.Mark Shorrock's Windenergy ltd windfarm proposal. Should they get planning permission for a windfarm on that site I would hope they were planning to make some contribution to the community....do you know if there is a community laying claim? If there isn't surly as you are going to have to look at the windfarm and you are about the nearest community perhaps you should ask for some community benefits prior to any planning application. I read of communities being offered a million up front...so maybe you asking for enough to fix your petrol problem wouldn't be excessive. Incidentally, perhaps the judge of a good windfarm location is one where you have difficulty finding a community to bribe or where the impact will be insignificant compared to what is there already !

jane,
we'll I think it boils down to the high cost of petrol and indeed the regulations. Wind farms in the near vicinity do contribute to the community especially those termed community farms.
But I must admit that those for the national grid, I'm not so sure.
But, still and all, I hope that with any wind farm being in close proximity that you are onto something worth while.
My personal concern is what happens meantime as regards the tanks.Surely it would be a very udesirable state if the flow of fuel were to stop,
