Isle of Jura

The island that famously has more deer than people is also known for being the location which George Orwell wrote 1984. Described by some as the 'wildest in the Inner Hebrides' its west coast is scattered with lofty caves and beaches that look as if they have been raked by a giant hand. Although the west side is now uninhabited there was settlements at Glengarrisdale and Ruantallain up until 1947.

The main town is Craighouse on the east coast where there's a shop, school, hotel, post office and distillery.

Geographically the island is renowned for the 'Paps of Jura', three mountains which dominate the landscape. Beinn an Oir the Mountain of Gold which stands at 2575 feet), Beinn Shiantaidh the Holy Mountain (is 2476 feet) and Beinn a' Chaolais the Mountain of the Kyle (at 2408 feet). At the north end of the island lies the Gulf of Corryvreckan, a tidal 'whirlpool' which can be seen best when the a spring tide is in flood running against a westerly wind.

Wild goats, Golden Eagles, Hen Harrier and upwards of 6,000 Red Deer (from which the island derives its name) are just some of the wildlife you can see.
