Isle of Arran

Just a short ferry crossing from the Ayrshire coast, Arran's climate and attractions have long made it a popular tourist destination. The Ayrshire ferry takes visitors to Brodick, but other important settlements on the island are Lamlash and Corrie.

Arran's most identifiable image is that of Goatfell, a striking and spectacular mountain which reaches 874 metres.

Nowhere else in Britain are so many types and ages of rock found in such a small area. Indeed, Arran has an honoured place in the history of the science of geology, being one of the areas in which James Hutton gathered his evidence for his theory that some rocks, the so-called `igneous' rocks, were produced by the cooling of magma within the earth's crust. Hutton's theories - at first controversial - eventually came to be accepted, and now form the basis of modern geology.

Tourism has been the mainstay of the island's economy for generations due to its friendly climate and proximity to the mainland. The island is rich in folklore and King's Cave between Blackwaterfoot and Machrie Moor on the south west coast lays claim to having housed Fingal, the legendary Irish Giant and is reputed to be the cave where Robert the Bruce met his inspiring spider.
