15 utterly essential Shawn Mendes facts we learned from his Radio 1 interview

The world's hottest teenage pop star (FACT!), has just turned 18 and has been making the most of it during his recent visit to the UK. This week, he bought his first pint. Our boy's all grown up *sniff*

Between visits to London pubs, Shawn stopped by Radio 1 for an exclusive interview with Cel Spellman and we now know so much more about the Stitches star than ever before.

We made note so you don't have to. Here's what we learned.

1. Shawn is a big fan of Cel Spellman's rings. He says Cel's bling is "on point".

2. He has been making the most of being 18 while he's in the UK - by going to the pub. "It's good to just walk into a place and for them not to turn you around," he says.

3. But if you work in a bar and see Shawn, don't be shy to ask for ID. "I'd like you to card me," he says.

4. Drinking his first pint made him feel like a proper grown up.

"I had my first pint," he tells Cel. "I had a beer with my friends. It was the most manly i've ever felt."

GRRRRRRR etc.

5. He's hoping to make sure he's home in Canada when he turns 19 so he can have his first legal pint there as well.

6. Shawn isn't worried about the end of his teens and doesn't think anything will change when he hits 20. "I think i'll always just act like a kid," he says.

7. The success he has experienced so far is only making him more determined to write even better songs. As if that's even possible.

"All you want to do is create more and greater music," he says.

"When it happens in America and Canada it's phenomenal, but when it's in the UK and across Europe it's overwhelming."

8. His new album, Illuminate, will be a lot more mature than Handwritten. "We're talking about grown up concepts so I wasn't afraid to touch on things I truly believe in," Shawn says. "Musically, i'm so proud of it."

9. There's something for everyone on the new album, even if he isn't 100% sure what the overall sound of record is.

"I was listening through and we were trying to figure out the vibe of the album and it was all so different," he says.

"We have something for people who love rock, country and pop."

10. But don't worry, the album makes perfect sense. "It's a super diverse album but still so cohesive," he says. PHEW.

11. He's been working on Illuminate for a long time. "The day after I released Handwritten I wrote the first song for Illuminate and it
was non-stop since then," he says.

12. But Shawn's not worried about the new record. No sir.

"I had so much to talk about and write about," says Shawn. "I didn't have any nerves. I just wanted to get it out."

13. He (of course) couldn't choose the best song on Illuminate. "It's like asking what my favourite child is. I literally couldn't answer that question."

14. He's helping young musicians get signed - such as James TW, who supported Shawn on his most recent tour.

"I came across him on YouTube," he reveals.

"He was 15 at the time. I sent it to my A&R at Island records in America.

"He was signed and I was involved, but I didn't really talk to him much until we were on tour in, where we actually got very close."

15. But despite having just turned 18 and his new-found love of beer, Shawn is still very well behaved on tour. "It's pretty chill," he admits.

"We take things day by day and we don't take things too seriously. We get done what we need to do but we also have a ping pong table and we also do crazy stuff."

Shawn's new album, Illuminate, is released 23 September 2016.

He will perform live at Radio 1's Teen Awards on Sunday 23 October 2016.
