The Snowmen

Today 26th March we went outside to build a snowman. At break time I built a snowman called Michael. In work time we built yet another snowman called Felton John. He and Michael are 2 good new pupils. They can really rock and roll. Michael had a Mohawk it was cool. Michael was my snowman. Felton John was not as cool as Michael because he was the coooooooooolest!

I enjoyed this project lots as we just played in the snow, but we did do topics when we were speaking. While building we did E.S, P.S.D, Maths, Art, History and Music. So we actually did loads of topics while having fun.

Anyone going to the school in Flotta or Fetlar is lucky. In my book, you are both A-1 Too bad I can't be young again, or I would strongly urge my parents to move to the islands. Good job!

mjc from NM,USA

carol from under grey skies

The Yeti is alive and well and living in Fetlar!! He's a very handsome fellow! What does he have in his hand?

FSB Fan from REALLY wish I was there

What splendid snowmen. They are so expressive and individual. They all seem aware of the inevitable fate that awaits them. There, you have several words to look up and discuss with your teachers.. and do you know wehre Siwthiod was once upon a time? It really did exist, so please tell me in a comment to this comment. Bye for now.

Barney from Swithiod very, very good

Very creative snowman-building. I particularly like Meltin John.

Jill from EK

Jill from Ek, you beat me to the Felton - Meltin John!! And here was me thinking I was being clever!!! Don't you just HATE when that happens? Actually, I wonder if he has melted? But, wow, he was a cracker, wasn't he!!??

FSB Fan from Sulking in a corner!

Come now, O Children of Fetlar, where was Swithiod situated??? S' no reason not to answer unless you are all too busy making more snowmen. Better snowmen than strawmen - another topic on which to ponder. Have a good week-end!

Barney from Swithiod feeling the schoolmaster urge

FSB fan, he's probably just a Meltin memory by now. But he has to take the prize for the best snowman I've ever seen!

Jill from EK

All young people on Fetlar and other islands of Shetland and Orkne must know where Nidaros, Kaupang and Swithiod were once located. Nidaros in fact is still there. Come on, now! The more you shirk, the bigger the task will become. Hint - Wikepedia!!

Barney from Swithiod disappointed

And Jellinge? And Birka?? You'll all get detention from next year's Up-Helly-A if you don't answer all of these by tea-time! No kidding!!!

Barney from Swithiod in times past

Shetland schools are on holiday!! Back on 14th April. Can't wait to see what/who Swithiod is!! Am I really ignorant?

Wondering about Swithiod from Swithiod neverland

I know where London is!! (somewhere in Kentucky, for the ibloggers slow on the take).

mjc from NM,USA

HA! Thank you for that information. I will repeal sentence of detention until April 15 at 23.59. Until then Fetlar youth, until then! Mjc, London is in the UK somewhere below Wick.

Barney from Swithiod wondering about Fetlar

Barney, London south of Wick? My eye! It's right there in Kentucky, as Wikipedia would certify. And there is no Livingston in that Kentuckian London, I can assure you. Fried chicken livers: London, Ky., as gastronomic heaven ...

mjc from NM,USA

And Kentucky is, if I can read my atlas right, S. of WIck?? N'est-ce pas? C'mon mjc, that ol' moonshine is finally getting to you.

Barney from Swithiod in a geography mood

Children of Fetlar, honour your history! Do not shirk the memory of your past!! I see you all, in my mind's eye, at this very moment scouring Wikepedia and other, more esoteric, sources of knowledge - Njal's Saga, Eskil Skalgrimsson ditto, The Viking Museum in Oslo, Roskilde also has a fantastically good ship museum, I would put these links up for you but you have to find them yourselves! Just over 24 hours to go, "klockan kl盲mtar f枚r dig (er). You have been warned!

Barney from Swithiod no longer laughing

London is on Eday...

Flying Cat from Orkney Mainland

Barney, this Swithiod thing is getting scarey!! 'You have been warned'?..... Maybe a bit over the top??? Perhaps children don't have your knowledge? (I'm an adult and I have not a clue what you are talking about) But then maybe I'm not a very knowledgable adult!!!

Concerned - I think! from I don't think I'm laughing either!

It's best not to admit to ignorance unless it becomes unavoidable... there is nothing scary about Barney, Concerned - he's a pussycat.

Flying Cat from Character References R Us

Nidaros - old capital of Norse Scandinavia (you see there wasn't any Norway/Sweden/Denmark in those times) Kaupang - old capital of vikings living in S. Norway, near where the Gokstad and Osberg viking ships were found a century ago. Swithiod - old capital of another bunch of vikings living in what is now V盲sta G枚taland, S. was probably on or close to the modern townships of V盲nersborg/Trollh盲ttan/Uddevalla. Jellinge, the capital of Harald Bluetooth, one of the mightiest of warrior kings from "Danish" Scandinavia, on the banks of the Roskilde fiord. Birka, the great trading post for the Svea vikings, who more or less by accident founded the city of Novogorod and hence the origins of Russia ("Russ" = person with a red beard). O children of Fetlar, great is my disappointment, but I expect you ahd other important things to learn about too. Not even teachers get things right every time. God Bless!

Barney from Swithiod sighing with disappointment

Your last sentence reveals a very great truth Barney - one which babybipeds' primary school teachers, almost to a man/woman, had no problem admitting to. 'Tis not always thus...

Flying Cat from ever admiring Firth Primary School

We looked up Swithiod Barney & couldn't find any direct reference to Fetlar so we assumed it was just Norse.

FetlarSchool from Fetlar

Ja, well, I have to admit that I don't either know of anyone from Swithiod wha actually mentions fetlar in their saga. I guess I was more thinking about generalities - the Northern Islands history and relations with the old vikings and their voyages to and fro. All the best and not long now until Summer hols!

Barney from Swithiod pleased

Now that school is back I am looking forward to seeing a new blog? I'm sure you have been doing something exciting that you could share with us!
