Books and Halls

Karen the Architect has been back with plans for the Hall. We struck lucky with our choice of architect because she really listens to what people say. These plans are a result of the previous consultation and are a mix from the original 3 options, only less of course, because the funding rules only ever change in one direction. The plans are on Development Coll's website, but basically, the whole building has moved up the hill as a result of the test holes, the main hall is gable end facing the road, and on the left is a long low building, very similar to Main Street. There is a 'communal' space between the hall and the loos, kitchen etc where the library and archive stuff can go and I think it looks terrific (and I'm not a member of the 'New Hall' fan club).
Books. The book club met. I was late so they had pretty much finished the book chat, but I think they liked it (phew). So as a reward for picking a book I've got lumbered with hosting the next meeting. I tried to say I'd be working, but I don't think they care if I'm there or not. It will be interesting, as on Monday there is a woodwork course in the barn from 7 until 9, and we have no parking so everybody has to reverse back up the drive. If book club people arrive at 8 no-one will be able to leave. I got quizzed on how I pronounce 'equerry', apparently I got it right, but I was in a minority and I'm not sure who is the judge on this. Discussion touched on previous books and one that I almost finished but ran out of time was produced. It turned out to be less popular now than when we discussed it properly and someone threatened it with the bin. But it was grabbed, forced open, a handful of pages were ripped out and it was shoved in the woodburner. I think the majority of us were rather shocked! I have a reverence for all books (and records, CDs) and for about five minutes I was quite disturbed, but actually it was rather liberating. And the book burnt jolly well. If I could lose some more inhibitions and burn some of our books we could save a fortune on coal. Then we talked about making mozzarella, IB got mentioned, there was the pro and anti computer talk, an odd conversation with MBEs and Colonsay, which were entirely unconnected and I started to drink wine (no more beer) and then it was quarter to three. As usual I was almost the last to leave.
We are going south to inspect my chair and check out Spring and stock up on supplies for the burger van, back soon.
