The Gun

The gun from the Nevada has been moved. Since it was raised from the sea it has lived at the hotel waiting to be smartened up. A lady on a mission managed to organise a concrete plinth, the very nice water borehole boys came over and sand-blasted it and it was painted straight away to stop the rust re-appearing. Finally the bronze was polished up and it was moved so it now points out over the bay, just up from the ferry terminal. The first thing that strikes me is how small it is. It was the only weaponry on the Nevada. I鈥檝e been round Nelson鈥檚 ship The Victory, and it had cannons everywhere; in a shoot-out with The Nevada my money would be on The Victory. Rumour has it The Nevada crashed into Coll because the Captain didn鈥檛 fancy another trip across the Atlantic in 1942. I can鈥檛 say I blame him. A lot of the cargo found its way to the locals including a lot of cigarettes. The site of the wreck is a favourite spot for fishing, and the large concrete bases show where the machinery for officially removing the cargo were.
