Mu Thimcheall – Episode 5 - Anns a' Ghàrradh

Hallò agus fàilte gu “Mu Thimcheall" còmhla riumsa, Linda.

Today, I’m doing a spot of gardening. An-diugh, tha mi ag obair anns a’ ghàrradh – I’m working in the garden, tha mi ag obair anns a’ ghàrradh.

Gàrradh. Garden. Gàrradh.

Anns a’ ghàrradh. In the garden. Anns a’... in the, anns a’... Anns a’ ghàrradh - in the garden. Anns a’ ghàrradh.

You’ll notice that the sound changes slightly when we add anns a’ – in the. Gàrradh becomes ghàrradh. Ghàrradh. We add an h after the G in order to make the gh sound. This happens because it follows a preposition and the definite article – in other words, “in the...”

So, we say anns a’ - in the - anns a’ ghàrradh. Gàrradh becomes ghàrradh. Anns a’ ghàrradh.

Tha mi ag obair - I’m working, tha mi ag obair. Obair is the Gaelic for work. Obair. Tha mi ag obair – I’m working. Tha mi ag obair anns a’ ghàrradh – I’m working in the garden, I’m gardening. Tha mi ag obair anns a’ ghàrradh.

I’m going to plant a shrub. The Gaelic for a shrub or a bush is preas. Preas. It’s the same word as we use for “cupboard”, funnily enough! Preas.

The verb “plant” in Gaelic is the same word that we use for “put.” Cur. Cur.

A’ cur preas. Planting a shrub, planting a bush. Tha mi a’ dol a chur preas – I’m going to plant a bush, a shrub. Tha mi a’ dol a chur preas.

First of all, I’ll need to dig a hole. Bidh mi a’ cladhach toll – digging a hole, a’ cladhach toll.

A’ cladhach – digging. Toll – a hole.

To dig a hole, I’ll need a spade – in Gaelic, spaid. Spaid.

Tha mi a’ cladhach toll le spaid – I’m digging a hole with a spade. Tha mi a’ cladhach toll le spaid.

I use gardening-gloves to keep my hands clean.

Gloves – miotagan. Miotagan. Gardening gloves. Miotagan-gàrraidh. Miotagan-gàrraidh.

Bidh miotagan-gàrraidh a’ cumail mo làmhan glàn.

Hand – làmh. Làmh. Hands - làmhan. Làmhan.

Bidh miotagan-gàrraidh a’ cumail mo làmhan glàn. Gardening gloves keep my hands clean. Bidh miotagan-gàrraidh a’ cumail mo làmhan glan.

Tha mi air am preas a chur dhan talamh.

Talamh – ground or soil. Talamh.

Agus le sin, tha an t-àm ann a-nise fois a ghabhail – I need a rest after all that digging but remember you can listen to this lesson again or find a list of the vocabulary used on our website, bbc.co.uk/beagairbheag. Chun an ath thuras, tìoraidh an-dràsta!
