Using music concepts and compositional methodsComposing Scottish music
Original music can be created in a variety of ways, through exploring and developing music ideas in a range of genres and styles through composing, improvising or arranging activities.
Pentatonic scales are commonly used in Scottish music. You could try composing or improvising a melody using a pentatonic scale like the one in the example above.
You could add a drone accompaniment. This is a note, sometimes more than one, held in the bass. Bagpipes have a drone which accompanies the melody.
Another useful style of note to use is the Scotch snap. This is a common rhythmic device found in Scottish music where there is a shorter note followed by a longer note.
