Composing Scottish music

Scottish scale of G A B D E.

Pentatonic scale

Pentatonic scales are commonly used in Scottish music. You could try composing or improvising a melody using a pentatonic scale like the one in the example above.

You could add a drone accompaniment. This is a note, sometimes more than one, held in the bass. Bagpipes have a drone which accompanies the melody.

Another useful style of note to use is the Scotch snap. This is a common rhythmic device found in Scottish music where there is a shorter note followed by a longer note.

Treble clef, 4/4 time signature and two eighth notes with an extra line 2/3 of the way across the notes.
