Finding inspiration
There are many ways to compose a piece of original music. Using your understanding of how to play an instrument and coupling it with the influence of songs and composers that inspire you is a great way to unlock ideas.
You might find it easier to compose a piece for the instrument that you play or for one that you particularly enjoy listening to.
Composers and artists have all been influenced by the music they have heard and learnt about. You should also think about taking this approach when experimenting and creating your own music.
While you listen to a piece of music, try to identify any features that are distinctive. There may be instruments that are prominent, or melodic and rhythmic patterns that are interesting.
Take note of the harmony used and the mood and the atmosphere of the music. This may give you ideas to use when creating your own music.
