First full Day in Malawi

We got up at seven this morning in our tents and the sun was already up and beating down on us. After eating breakfast and having showers half the group left to buy us some food, they're still gone... Today we're going to Mthumthana School to start our project though that can wait until after we take advatage of the volley ball net.

The camp we're staying at is called Mabuya Camp and the website for it can be found at so you can all have a look at where we're staying and be jealous of how great it is here :P

We'll upload some photos as soon as we can figure out how to make the computer pick up the camera. Until then you'll just have to wait.

Someone has just pointed out that I seem to have an obsession with clean clothes..... can I just say that I posted the same message twice as I thought the first one had been screened out because of 'pants'... Hope you get some food soon guys.

Sandy's Mum from Islay

SHOWERS!!? VOLLEYBALL? Presumably there are some clouds of mosquitoes and a nearby swamp? You were kept awake by howling hyenas? You can see vultures circling over the area where your colleagues set out through the bush to forage for food?

Hairy Shirt from The Dungeon

Glad to hear you all arrived safe and sound. Can't wait for the photos!!

Joy from 91热爆 on Islay

This pants thing seems to be getting out of hand. I'm with the 91热爆. Pants should be censored. Food. Now that IS interesting. Casserole of warthog? Ostrich steaks with boiled yams and a side of paw-paw? Please dont tell us there is a Domino's Pizza just over the street.... If there is - I dont wish to know...

Carl from in PC

It would appear that parental concerns about pants are unfounded because I read on the Mabuya Camp website that, "If you need your clothes washing, we have some lovely ladies to do it for you." An Omo/sink search would not appear to be necessary.

Clean clothes. Now you want them to have food too, Sandy's mum (and others)? What next?!! Toilet paper?! # When daughter went hiking up continental divide, it was take in and haul out, no footprint. As they did not want to take out their toilet paper they made do with leaves etc. Hopefully they have the Malawi Times at the IHS in Africa camp: should come in handy. # Showers: sounds positively decadent. Tip: assuming that the pipes carrying the water are above ground, even without water heater, it's possible to have a hot shower late afternoon if one does not dally. First come, first served ... # And if the food scouting team does not come back on time, remember: lizards!! # y'all have fun working hard.

"Have a great time, work hard!" Sandy's mum. I chuckled when I read it. I send those exact words to daughter at uni., and I am glad to see that I am not the only parent who does not see any contradiction in the juxtaposition - but quite the contrary.

mjc from NM,USA

Hi one and all, hope all is well and that you are all having the best time eve.

diane,bridgend from islay

The young folks from Islay are going out to Malawi, Mr. Ratburn, to learn, have fun and help. # "We yanks would die in a poor country like that.". No comment, Mr. Ratburn - or I just might burst/bust a gasket. # The Islay students are very adventurous and lucky to have a supportive group of adults/parents. I am sure they will be better citizens/persons as a result of the experience.
