Protect Yourself!

In plain English, because this is a bit of a rant!
My computor was hacked and I had to get my son (who is a technical genius in his mam`s eyes) to remove not one, but THREE back door Trojan viruses. They even got into my PayPal account and it`s only the fact the bank doesn`t allow stored passwords on the computor that they didn`t get into that, however, the son assures me that given time they would as there is software available that keeps an eye on when you log into unstored password sites and retrieves the info when you do.
Like most self employed folks, I keep business and bank details on my computor. The whole thing`s given me a bit of a shock I can tell you!
Not long ago my PayPal account was hacked, from China of all places! Luckily I spotted it early enough and all they got was twenty pounds. It would have been worse. As it was it gave them access to my bank and other financial details, so following the banks instructions I`d to change my bank card which took an age, change the details and all relevant logging in info etc....
I don`t mind the hassle really...it`s better than being thieved from...but it just makes me feel as if I`ve been burgled, you know? The whole invasion of privacy thing...*insert scowling smilie here*
We have good Firewall and anti-virus protection but of course hackers upgrade their m.o all the time and sometimes your protection struggles to keep up with it, which I think is what happened here.
Added to which, it slowed my computor down horrendously to the point I couldn`t do anything much online, not a good thing when you run a business largely dependant on the Net.
So now I`m spending a few days being paranoid, constantly checking for viruses etc, and tidying up the computor.
Folks, double check your online protection, bump up your Firewalls etc, and keep an eye on Spyware and the like.

Normal service will be resumed soon as possible, once I`ve sorted my computor and stopped feeling like the return of the Viking bloodeagling practice is a good thing for some folks......grrrrrr..........

This time I understood every word. But it is interesting to know how the Orcadian dialect is influenced from the Norse language. Computers are very ok when they work.

Dag from Norway, soon on my way to Iceland

i'm sorry to hear of your problems with compter--hears hoping i don't get any problems,i wouldn't know what to do!!

Oh Hermit, how dreadful. Reading your blog made my blood run cold! I hope you get everything fixed OK. Like you, I am totally dependent on my computer for my livelihood (but luckily not for banking purposes) and am paranoid about it. To counter this, I pay vast sums of money each month to a local company on a maintenance contract, which gives me peace of mind (and is worth every penny). I don't know what bloodeagling is, but it sounds like a suitable punishment to me! Good luck

AVG anti spy and anti virus software is quite good, even the basic free version. I use it, and I understand most students at daughter's uni. use it also. No problem since I used it about a year or so. I update and clean up the spyware cookies every few days.

I always wear protection HL, no viruses here, hopefully...

Somebody got into my bank details, and they tried to steal my identity, but I've nothing to steal, so they left me 拢20 in my bank account, which wasn't there before.

sorry to hear your computor got hacked-i don't know what i would do if it happens to me and man with magic fingertips doesn't know much more than me so he wouldn't be much use. thankfully i rarely buy things through the net

not meaning to sound really really stupid - but how did you know?

HL has your son thought about running your accounts on disketts or on an independant HD. that can be unpluged, I do, and that is my first FIREWALL.ask him to think about it. regards roy.

roy from Sofala. Oz

HL an update just before i was about to close the Noton Antiviruse whent into overdraive(Auto) It found no problems, but this is the first time that the programe has actuated.

Roy from Sofala. Oz

There is a simple answer to your problems. Get rid of your Microsoft operating system and switch to Unix - Linux - BSD - Solaris or Mac operating system. No virus or spyware problems and apart from Mac it is all free. If you do not fancy that, just try Firefox or SeaMonkey browser and use cookie controls etc.

Oh my goodness! I was just about to verify my PayPal account with my bank account info (as per PayPal's demands...) but now maybe I wont do that!!!

Michelle Therese from Mainland Orkney

Hi Roy, good idea and I`ve mentioned it to the son and he`s working on it for me...gave me quite a start to think all my work details might be threatened! Hiya Corsequoy, ages ago now we tried to install Linux but it didn`t work out, I think I`d bought a really old version (from Ebay!) so maybe that was it. Have to admit, not too enamoured of Microsoft at the mo.... Hi Michelle, have to say, I`ve found no real probs with PayPal and think it was just one of those things my account got hacked the last time, other than that it seems to be a convenient way to do businnes online. :)

Hermit from taking it all in

p.s. scallowawife, I found out doing a virus check, lol. It flagged up the three trojans, and me son had to fix it for me (I do that, point him at the non functional techy thing saying "please fix it" and he normally does) I use AVG to check for viruses.

Hermit from Sanday

Regarding your previous Linux trial, you do not have to install GNU Linux, you can run many Linux distros from a live CD, and save, (if you wish) your setup/details in various locations. (ie. back to the same writable CD, USB stick, squash file on hard drive, or virtually any other storage media.) For a first trial I would recommend Puppy Linux. Just download the iso, burn it to CD, and boot from that CD. What you get is a basic operating system that is easy to alter or add to.

p.s. Jill, bloodeagling is where the vikings (though, supposedly originally the Franks really) tied their captives to a pole, and whilst keeping them alive, broke open and spread apart the ribcage like an eagles wings, then (also trying to keep them alive) took out the lungs and spread them out too. I keep saying, I`m not a pacifist, lol....

Hermit from Sanday

I think Bloodeagling at the Fank might just take off...I hope AnnieB and the Organisers of Fank '08 take it on board...and I LOVE the idea of burning Puppy Linux! Right up a cat's street.

this blog is turnin into a complete gibberish gobbledegook - am I a luddite or a trojan? I just booked tickets for our hoilday in Aberdeen and Glasgow - and managed to one: forget about air discount scheme, (so spent a frustrating half hour trying to cancel and re book, but managed it) two: use a switch card with no money in it, (so slowing up the entire process) and three: my computer refuses to recognise that it is connected to the internet, unless coaxed. grr.Can anyone explain why I have to un plug my computer from the internet to speak (its so noisy on the line if its conected) and why my computer has dififcuty reconnecting? we are on BT broadband.
