Howdy! I love the ducks!!! Did you ever get the email I sent you? My own email is hokey so I don't know if you replied or not - sometimes I never get emails that folks send. I set up a new email account and it froze up and hasn't worked since. I can't win!!

Very busy with work but just a quickie (apart from thanks for the photos, great stuff): the closer shot of your merganser makes me think it's not a merganser, it's a Mandarin Duck. Perhaps you could check him out again. If he is a mandarin, maybe that's why he's so bossy!

Sorry about the wind Hermit, it was the Chilli that I had, it always does that to me, sorry again. As for target practise, I can think of many things, none of which are animal-friendly, so better not say....

My comment from yesterday hasn't appeared - it was just to say that I think your merganser is a mandarin duck!

Awwww...those two wee kitties all curled up together nearly melted my heart. That Merganser is amazing. He is very striking. Thanks for these pics. Blessings, Vera Nadine

Your ducks are lovely, even the nest looks decorative - nice touch with the pink string!

Jill, is a mandarin one o` they ducks the Chinese serve up wi` thon orange sauce?! *looks again at the peedie duck and wonders how many it would feed* He`s also gaun bald!! Moulting, I think, he has lost a fair bit o` his crest. Still though, so long as there is nae thing wrong wi` him I`m mair than happy he is hanging aroond. Michelle, I did reply tae your email, did ye no` get it? *mutters at the vagaries o` the net* Tws, nane o` mine were animal friendly either...bearing in mind me dad is a poacher.....but the only poachable wildlife on Sanday are the rabbits, and it`s nae fun when the farmers are usually glad ye shoot them!

I think it's a Mandarin too. The green wingflash is wrong, and the red-breasted merganser has a dark green head. It is one of only two sawbills in the UK, the other is the goosander. Mandarins are exotics and usually kept in captivity.

Eh Hermit, I think the Chinese have a preference for Peking duck!! But then, that may well be a canard ...
