I liked the Scottish posts too! :) Bows are great - I used to make them myself when I was little, and I would love to have a real one. But I guess it's not very girlie to do so...but then, who cares, right? great blog! http://onelifeamongthemany.blogspot.com

AAAAH!! I'm having Scots withdrawls! How am I supposed to learn your language if you Natives keep talking "Plain" English??
Michelle Therese from Mainland
This is a personal preference and not a criticism, Hermit, but I find text written in non-standard English quite laborious to read because of all the shortened words and apostrophes. It almost has to be read at reading-aloud speed (with lips moving sometimes!). I would think for a non-English speaker it would be very difficult. Using local words and expressions is a different matter entirely, and is good for everyone to learn and familiarise themselves with. But of course you just go on as you want to, Hermit, your blogs are great and always interesting (and I agree with you about the retail therapy, although my own tastes run more to clothes, books and silver jewellery...)

I ken that most lots of folks liked the Scots too. I cannae speak fer anyone else but I'm partial tae the Scots meself. Nae bother, you're great either way! Keep up the great writing! Blessings, Vera Nadine

I prefer the Scots Hermit Life, as it makes me have tae think aboot whit it a' is that yer gaun' on aboot, but whit aboot, if ye put a few brackets in here and there, ye ken ( you know ) jist tae let folk ken whit yer blabbin aboot ( just so that the non-Scots amongst Island Blogging visiting community, may understand what your lovely blog is all about ) as I've just done here'n' there. You can always borrow some of my brackets, ( ) , { }, [ ], take your pick, which set of brackets do you prefer HL? Scallowawife hasn't been blogging for a while, so there are plenty brackets lying around IB. That is the caring, sharing, Thewhitesettler that I am, always ready to help in a crisis. So it's up to you now HL, open the box or take the money ( oops sorry, got my connection all crossed again, that DD wait til I see him again ) Cheers.

i think your blogs in broad scots are logical and keep p the good work!

Well, it doesn't bother me whether you use Scots or English. I'm just happy to read the blog and the fantabulous stories! As for shopping - it's a very necessary (note the word necessary) part of civilized life), although like Jill I tend to go for clothes, books and silver bits. ;)

So long as you don't use Chinese, Hermit ....

If whilst internet shopping you come across a cheap accordian him indoors would love one. Oh and in scots or plain speaking your blog is still a great read.

I keep misreading the title of this blog as Shipping Is A Vice....I think it's because someone not a million miles from my left elbow feels this is so!

It was the Scots that attracted me to your brilliant site, please don't pander to the minority.... I like Tws'ssssss suggestion with the brackets() ( ) as a compromise if need be, but don't see why you should change. Although a native Scot in the Capital I have not been brought up with "the scots" and find your blogs challenging but well worth the effort......How come on google earth there's a big white cloud over Sanday?
dibdenp from the capital
Och it`s no` that anyone has been complaining at a`, but I appreciate for non Scots me speil can be hard tae follow, but I`m happy tae write in either, so will just keep me stories in plain English and stick tae the Scots for me blogs then. (being as it`s the way I speak, which explains why lots o` folks keep going "what? eh?" at me....) :) Many thanks for the feedback folks, much appreciated. :) Dibdenp, I dinnae ken aboot Google earth, only that if ye look at the weather forecasts on the telly, ye can never see Orkney at a`, as it`s ayways under a cloud!
Hermit from Sanday
It's much easier for me to read plain English, but never mind me . If the Islanders want you to write Orcadian, just do it. I enjoy your stories anyway.
Dag from Norway
Hi Dag, there have been a few folks have said to me they find the blogs difficult to read, I`ll keep blogging in Scots but if anyone wants them translated into ordinary English please just say and forward an email address, be more than happy to. It doesn`t take much extra effort, I`m a touch typist so it doesn`t take long for me to type anything out. :) (plus ah`m an obliging wee soul and am ayways suprised folks are kind enough tae read onyway ;-) ) I remember being fairly shocked when I saw the far off places folks who leave some comments come from! I keep forgetting the internet makes the world a smaller place. :)

I'm also reading just to "hear" the Scots accent. It helps me learn better.

I like the Scots too, it takes a bit ,longer to read but it's worth it and the stories are well worth it. You seem to be getting famous - any book signings plannned?
