Summer Visitors

Now that summer is a-cumin in, the weather improves a wee bit so as friends can actually plan tae travel tae the wilds o` Orkney without needing a bucket for the boat or valium for the plane. Well, in theory the weather calms doon...in reality, I hae seen snow in June up here, and right noo the weather is giving us rain o` pre-flood proportions...so ye never can tell...

We hae a flock o` visitors coming tae visit us ower the summer months. I always look forward tae it...being a hermit means, I dinnae go oot ower much so am always happy for others tae come visit me here.
Given me interests...history and reenactment...I have devised a good nights entertainment for some o` the visitors.
We have a building tacked onto the main hoose, it was the auld original hoose afore they built this one in the thirties for the local schoolteachers. It has thick walls, one tiny window and the most beautiful flagstone floor wi` a vast open fireplace.
So, what better, I thought, than a medieval feast? (Aye, my mind doesnae usually work the same way normal folks does....that really was the first thing that came tae mind!)
So it`ll be getting red oot (Scots for cleaned and tarted up!) and the fire will be lit...here is one o` the problems, but no` an insurmountable one....the grate is huge, how tae find enough wood and logs tae burn all night on a virtually treeless island....
and the main room will be dressed wi` a large dining table, draped chairs, and candles all ower the place.
On the menu will be roast duck (me own) and venison (bought in frae Scotland, distinct lack o` deer in Orkney although I`m led to believe they did once live here) with roasted herbed vegetables and home made bread, cheeses and fruits and plenty o` mead and whisky.
Next I just have tae get the music sorted, so am looking aroond for something suitable for a medieval feast. Suitable attire will also be arranged, as will some games and pursuits....we will be at the crossbow practice in the garden...luckily all but one o` me friends hae done this afore so are good at it...and there will also be an axe throwing competition, wi` a bottle o` mead for the prize.

See now, I ken how tae mak visitors work for their dinner....;-)

Well, it`s only a few weeks away frae now, so I have tae get scouring the beach for any stormblawn wood for the fire.

I did think o` acting as the traditional medieval jester, but I only ken one joke and have told everyone it quite a few times ower......

carol from feeling green

Keep your eyes scanned up there, we have started to put out the summer machine gun posts on vatersay to keep them at bay. Or in the bay as thye case may be. Good luck up there, light a fire if you see too many long ships coming and we'll send the Barra lifeboat to help

Crofterbill from from the Vatersay bunker

looking at staff's music collection - you might want to consider Blackmore's Night for your medieval shindig - and can i have some duck...*purrrrr*

mia from ancient music emporium

You don't need jokes Hermit, there is fun things all around us, you just need to dig deep, and you'll see the funny side of everything. It looks like agood time will be had by all, but don't do the William Tell thing with the apple, after a few drams, and don't play Cupid ( Cupid draw back your bow and let your arrow go straight to my lovers heart, I think that's the words ) with that Cross-bow, and who upset it to make it so cross, is there a really angry-bow????

Tws from Lewis

Crofterbill, all viking types absolutely welcome here! *watches eagerly for longships*..thanks for the recommendation mia, will try and find it, I have a tiny collection of medieval cds but am adding Corvus Corax for some fun along with Pat Spero`s medieval harp music, and yes, ye can have some duck, there will be plenty :D Tws, all the games are safely played here before the drams start tae flow....I have done similar things afore ye see, not medieval but feasts, all of me guests ask for shots of the crossbow and the axes so I`m an obliging lassie. Nobody has ever volunteered for William Tell yet though... Carol, get yerself over this way and you`ll be most welcome. :-) Pics will be forthcoming which should be fun seeing as some of us will be dressing for the occasion. ;-)

Hermit from Sanday

Well we have a longship here, and with a menu like the one proposed it should not be difficult to find a crew, there are plenty of axes, cudgels and helmets to go around, just press gang a few Up Hellya teams, mind you not the TV ones we had this year. Be aware though Hermit, after the sea journey South a crew would be well and truly thirsty and up for all the Viking R & P tricks.

ducks are Barebraes's specialty, Mia, but of course Hermit may be a mean hand at it too. Perhaps I should not have mentioned Barebraes and her ducks to potential visitors: I mean, she is generous to a fault and there may not be any left by the time I take the ferry to Shapinsay. I would not want to get to her fortress and find upon sitting at table with napkin well tucked under my chin that Barebraes is trying to pass frozen store bought/processed duck and roast potatoes as fresh (hopefully she will have her Rayburn hook going by then) to her visitors.

Thank you for inviting us vikings over to Orkney. And I will come in peace this time. I'd rather have a few valium and a plane than a longship and beeing seasick.

Dag from Norway

Oh, how I wish I weren't so far away - it's sounds like so much fun! Please, please take lots of photos.

Hello again Hermit! Have you heard of the "Thinking Blog Award"? It's when someone chooses five blogs that they think are superb. Well, you've been awarded the "Thinking Blog Award" YAY!! Now, you have to give the award to five blogs and give links to them so others can see who they are. CONGRATS!! Cheers! www.thewalledgarden.blogspot.com

The Ducks are fattenning up nicely mia and apart from the wee yellow fluffy one and the black one with white tips of its wings you can have any one you wish. I dont think cats like potatoes so I will save the frozen ones for mjc :)

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Well Hermit, it's been years since I had the chance to do any hearth cooking but for a summer invite to Orkney I could dig out some of my old reenactment clothing and drop round your place with some cookware. The Goddess of the Hearth, that's me. ;) We could have a wee pagan feastie. Sounds like a blast, have a delightfully fun summer!

Vera from www.veranadine.com

what are yu keeping frozen for mjc. cats or ducks??

carol from perplexed

I'll take either, Carol, provided the sauce (gravy) is tops, and there is plenty of it. I have eaten zebras, and it tasted just like buffalo (or Highland cattle, I presume): lean, tough, and so I think nicely braised cat with roasted potatoes would be alright ... i.e. could not be worse (what say you, Barebraes?). 'tis true I would rather have rabbit/hare over cat, but polite guests never question (so my ma told us).

mjc from NM,USA

Will take ye up on that Vera, being a pagan/heathen with a healthy appetite :-) mjc, lots of rabbit here, we get sick of it though the hare has to come over frae Orkney mainland as we`ve none on Sanday :-( I do make a cracking fine bunny stew though.

Hermit from Sanday

ggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

carol from sharpening her claws

*grrrrrrrr* I too would rather have rabbit....but not hare.

Flying Cat from a hard stare

Hermit!! we the not-included demand a ful report on this special evening We also wish you MUCH success in this endeavor and you better invite us NEXT time...........yer wee pal Frodo.

frodo the scot from utica michigan

Sorry, I'll go with Wogan, they all taste like chicken!!

Lerwick Trevor from From a hot stove

thank you barebraes, duck is always a pleasure to have, not sure that mjc is staying on my favourite person list at the momen, how heartless he can be...

mia from in a sunbeam

mjc - dare not be with you on the cat entree on the menu, mia wields a lethal tail, never mind claws. Like you I have tried zebra - preferred kudu and ostrich, you have no idea how happy i am to have found a uk source for biltong ( now to find a hiding place from mia as i don't like sharing)

jas from under mia's paw

I have always had a fondness for bunnies, come to think of it.
