A New Arrival

So himself gauns oot tae the byre this morning and then I hear a shout tae "come here the noo"....
and there, in his arms, is the bonniest wee piebald goatkid, freshly born and shivering wi` the cauld.
For it is fearfu` cauld in the byres, even wi` layers o` straw and the doors tight shut, your breath mists up and if it got ony caulder ye would hear it tinkle as it dropped tae the floor....
Onyway, the wee kid was no` looking awfu weel, so I lifted her oot o` his arms and brought her in by the trusty auld warhorse o` a stove.
Half an hoor in the warm oven perked her up, then another half hoor o` cuddles frae yours truly, and meself and himself had tae wonder how to mak` sure she didnae have tae gaun back intae the icy cauld byre.
We hae a porch o` sorts attached tae the ootside door. It has doors at both ends, and windows, so we`ve blocked one end off and put doon a thick layer o` straw and added some hay bales for guid measure, and we put the new nan in there wi` fresh water, barley and hay. Like a` new mams, she was fair starving hungry and set tae the food fine style.
Her udder was fu` up so we milked a wee bitty off her tae ease the tightness o` it, then set and guided the goatkid tae the teats and after a few misplaced squirts, she soon got the message and began tae drink.
I put a portable gas heater in the other end o` the porch, and will leave it on as long as we can, it tak`s the bite oot o` the cauld and has done the wee kid and her mam a wheen o` guid.
So as of this afternoon, both are doing alright, although we are aware the kid might no` mak` it through the night. Fingers crossed though. I hope she does.
If all goes weel and she does mak it through her first night, I`ll post a picture o` her tomorrow, she is awfu cute!
Bit o` a bitter cauld time o` year tae be coming intae the world though....

the other half managed tae get the caravan back on its twa wheels, though it is a wee bit lopsided still. He also had tae board up the broken window and find a board for the skylight which took off and ended up twa fields awa!
I had a wheelbarrow which is now in tiny bits, what puzzles me though is the large metal wheel is nae whar tae be seen! So the wind has claimed it for a prize, greedy wind...
The pond at the side o` the track keeps flooding...it bleeds intae another pond further doon the track and that leads intae the sea, but the tides are awfu high this time o` year and the whole thing backs up and frequently floods the track...times like this, we could dae wi` oor ain boat!

hope the wee goat survives. your weather sounds as bad as our is. were still having icy gale force winds-couldn't get to sleep before 5 a.m only this time it wasn't because of partying but the noise and the force of the winds terrified me-spent most of the night texto then phoning to man in nz on my mobile as we had no lights etc; thank god i have a collection of really old petrol lamps

Keep us informed, Hermit, keep us informed!! Do try and get some sleep though, and not worry too much about the goatkid. # The metal wheel is probably in St. Margaret's Hope by now, on the way to Scrabster. Better that than having it come knocking at your window.

its my 60th birthday today so keep that kid alive for all of us

Fingers crossed for the wee kid! Also the weather is supposed to be getting warmer towards the end of the week, so that should help her as well. Hope no-one was on the receiving end of the metal wheel from your barrow :-)

Howdy, Hermit. You mentioned elsewhere that you went to Brora High School, and so out of curiosity I checked Brora. Sutherland is even more unpopulated as Sanday, is it not? Did you spend most of your life there, or/and have you been in Orkney a while? If this is too inquisitive, just ignore the questions. # About the caravan: hope the skylight was not broken into bits (I assume it was heavy duty plastic, and so it may have survived). Pity also about the broken window - glass, was it? I assume there are no trees acting as windbreak. At least the Hydro can't use the excuse of trees falling down on power lines to explain the electric interruption. By the way, what large metal wheel are you talking about (I assume you are not referring to a spare tire for the caravan)?

Hermit... your almost daily account of life as it is on Sanday is Precious. I live in a Rathole of a city called detroit so its hard for me to imagine your daily activities.I came from a small mainland village called Uddingston near Glasgow and as a kid loved my yearly trips to Arran on holiday. BUT yours is the life great stories are made of and I for one collect your blogs and love the colorful descriptions you give to everything. Very Rabbie Burns. I admire you tenacity and I'm envious of the Purity in your reporting God bless and all the success in the world .........your wee fan frodo

Oh, I'm so glad the little kid is doing OK. She is lovely! I think goats are amazing, I'd really like to keep them but I live in the middle of Stromness. I love your writing, Hermit Life, you are a true poet! best of luck

Ha-ha found you! I'll have to see if we can get hold of some chains for ya! You'll have to get himself to sink some anchor points in though. You'll be suprised what the stinky one has lying around in storage!

We`ve been here on Sanday for aroond 16 years noo, I think. We found the wheel frae the barrow! It was in a field some distance awa`, but there isnae much o` a barrow tae put it back on...the skylight was shattered tae pieces though, but we just boarded it up so it`s fine. Ye learn tae mak` do and mend here. Frodo, hiya! Isn`t Detroit whar they mak` a` the cars? Nice tae see ye here. *waves at Gina* hullo missus! Nice tae see you here tae. I`m ayways surprised folks read this ye ken, there`s some strange wee part o` me brain which thinks still, I`m just sharing this stuff wi` the keyboard and laptop...*blushes*

P.S Happy Birthday Richard btw!

Aye, Richard from Fl., you will have to drop by Hermit's abode and try the curry when you are sixty one. Goat meat should be excellent at that tender age (the goat kid's not yours, for crying out loud!). And Scotch bonnet or Habanero add just the right zing to the vinadaloo. Just tell Hermit mjc sent you. If you want Nan with your curry, I am afraid you'll have to bring your own.

ach, get yourself a goat, Stromness Dragon, and park it in the Town Council Chambers (and threaten them all with a report to the RSPCA as well as the European Court for Animal Justice in Pamplona if they move the goat instead of feeding it!).
