I'm glad that mobile phones work in the byre...

Dialing madly...

"Hello, Erlend?"

"Yeah?" (Mooing in background)

"Um...there's a cow looking at me through the kitchen window."

"Oh?"

"She's eating the honeysuckle as she watches me prepare dinner."

"Oh?!? We'll be aroond in just a second!"

It would be easy and perhaps fashionable to attack our diarist on several counts, the most suspicious in our time, for being American, and Catholic, and to take this at face value. Like Margaret Drabble, I loathe everything American, and I dislike this present Pope for his smug superiority and his dinosaur views. When he became Pope he grinned in satisfaction, instead of looking shocked and humbled by the responsibility. But it is refreshing to find someone as our diarist who is so full of enthusiasm about Orkney life, and tackles it with great energy. One very good Americanism to drop right away would be the use of the wrod "cool" which belongs in the rubbish bin along with baseball caps and Starbucks coffee.
