Another Daft Idea

Here's another one : A passenger ferry from Craighouse to Crinan.

How's this supposed to work then? Who is going to run it? Surely the operator and crew would need to live on Jura (all four of them) due to the weather conditions - if they were based on Islay or the Mainland how would they get to Craighouse in time for the first sailing, especially if the sea was rough early on but quitened down nearer the departure time.

12 passengers, 6 bikes and packages?

Summer months only, earning 拢60k per year? This equates (I cannot spell) to about 拢2500 per week, this in turn means approx 100 people a week using it at the proposed full adult return price, take into account concessionary and child fares, maybe even 120 to 150 people a week. 15 to 20 people per day, GET REAL.

No ferry crossing in the evening, stay at Crinan Hotel, nice as it is not many Jura people can afford to pay their prices.

Missed the bus because the ferry is late? Do what? Until you can get back to Jura!

The whole thing has not been thought out correctly. ONCE AGAIN!!!!

If something along these lines is ever going to work, it has to be thought out properly and with the wishes of Jura people.

I am all for attracting a few more tourists to Jura but IS THIS THE WAY?

Once again a badly thought out idea and another waste of our money!!

I am really disillusioned in the way that scheme's are thought up just to grab money that is there, using the phrase "well if we don't take it, someone else will"
Leave the money for proper, feasable and commercially viable idea's.

That DO NOT need a subsidy to survive.

How about a sea plane?

Now there IS A GOOD IDEA!!!

Stephen from Jura

I think it is a good idea, it is well worth a trial at least, once the operator, the fare structure and timetable are in place and published I imagine it will be used by more than Jura residents. I have only been on Jura once and that was driving a JCB from Kinauchdrachd to Feolin Ferry enroute to Portnahaven, I would enjoy a day trip over to Jura, I'm sure many tourists will think the same.

Luinneach from Luing

Start your own organisation Steve, your idea sounds good and more sensible, put the others on your committee.

Michael from Keils, Jura

It may sound like a good idea but the numbers just don't add up. In order that this ferry is viable we are told that EVERYONE on Jura from the very youngest to the very oldest must use it for a minimum of 8 return trips per season to generate 50% of the predicted 拢60,000 reveneue. That just wouldn't happen. Without a booking system Jurachs will think twice about taking a chance that they will actually get a place on the boat particularly when returning to Jura. It would not be possible to get to Kennacraig to get the evening Cal-Mac sailing and the possibility of being stranded in Crinan with no transport late in the day and having to find accommodation in the Lochgilphead area in the summer season will not attract Jurachs to rely on this service as their first choice. This is not the alternative ferry service that Jura needs. What the majority of people on Jura want is a vehicle ferry running from Craighouse, failing that they would prefer to see the Jura/Islay link upgraded, but instead this proposal, originally a Jura Development Trust piloted project is being driven forward by the IatE Committee (leadership of both these groups is one and the same) in panic mode because after almost 3 years of being an IatE area nothing of note has been achieved. There was a trial run in the summer with a RIB which did trips round the bay to see what people thought of the type of boat that would be used for this service and, yes, generally the reaction of those who went in the boat was good but unfortunately quite a lot of those who went were holiday makers who, hardly surprisingly, thought it was great! To be really boring parking is also going to be a problem. Even three or four cars left for the day in Craighouse will cause problems

Gael Force from Craighouse

As King Steve says, its all a bunch of self-serving, welfare pigs slopping from the same goverment slop-trough. Its just another Millineum Dome...in the Hebrides. The people involved in trying to get nearly 1 million pounds of TAXPAYERS money..i.e. yours and mine, couldn't even run their own business -and now we want to give them OUR money to build a WHITE ELEPHANT? This is why Britain is going down the loo-and by the way for the Gael Force comments, the supposed "fact" that most people want a direct link from Craighouse to the mainland is yet another "doublespeak" fromt the same white elephant mafia - for 30 years a private company has been trying to get a ferry to Jura-but hillbilly backwardness from Jura folk, under the table politics, and pure stupidity from the "IATE" are refusing to believe a GOVERNMENT funded consultation that recommended a LAGG to MAINLAND route-the same route used for centures-what would make you think the MIGHTY IATE is smarter than Thomas Telford-what Jura has is COMMUNISM -when the word "community" is used by a small self-interested group to try and bully the rest of the residents into "their" way of doing things, that's what you have-and the fine example of Scottish Labour politics with its "gimme-gimme" culture is what has created all of this-so its not get out incomer, its get off Jura to the welfare pigs, we're tired of the self-serving, under the table, lining your own pocket CROOKS on Jura-and you know who you are-and so do WE!

Ruaridh from Ruantallin

I think Ruaridh you need some help, you have obviously lived in isolation far too long. There is no need for this kind of talk. Live and let live.

Rev. A. Lation from Some where near you

Ruaridh, when you wake up, you really wake up. What's wrong? Have a nightmare? Sleep tight, you'll need to, after all that finger exercise.

Stephen from Jura

Ruaridh, you must have still been asleep, having one of those totaly weird dreams, when you wrote that man. You know those dreams when every thing is really exaggerated, out of sync with the real world, unrealistic fantasies with nasty undercurrents of threats and violence. Time you stopped zzzzzinng and snorting man. Wake up!

Backward hillbilly from Craighouse

I liked him better when he was asleep.......'Golden slumbers kiss your eyes/Smiles awake you when you rise'.............etc.

Flying Cat from in ward vituperation and bile

Ruaridh is right to an extent. It's been proved the majority of people on jura want a direct car service but unfortunately the person involved in IaTE doesn't want this and is trying to railroad the majority into settling for the option that he/she prefers.

getreal from craighouse

A stable incoming source of money is very possible for Jura, I think. An increasing number of people want to "get real" (someone blogged that on your site). Your lovely small isles will be in demand...if you prepare for some slow and sustainable and controlled eco tourism. Some networking across the vast oceans and the network can regularise, providing a regular (if unostentatious (but who wants ostentation?)) economic input. There is a way of sustaining the integrity of community, its language and ways, and controlling/expoliting a lucrative visitor income. "Reality" visitors from Scotland and elsewhere are a longterm possibility. As long as Jura people keep control and a longterm view for their young people.

jennifer from denmark

getreal - I know a couple of good garages on Islay where you could get your car serviced, they are in the phoney book.

Old Stock from Jura

Is it just me OR does jennifer from Denmark make no sense at all????

Stephen from Isle of Jura

Ommmmmmm. It's the long dark Scandinavian winter nights what does it. I think whitesettler could learn something from her use of brackets within brackets. Not sure what, but definatley something.

Flying Cat from a Zen retreat

don,t think jura will need any ferries, it seems to have sunk. as there has not been a posting from there for a while, please let us know ur ok , stephen, lol

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...snort......... zzzzzzzzzzzzzz...not another daft wanna be writer from south-of-the-border! Will Self?.....................zzzzzzzzzzzz... who's that? What's he gonna do, "learn us our letters", us hebri-billies...?

ruaridh from ruantallin

ruaridh from ruantallin: after reading your comments , i think some spelling lessons would do no harm, oh and don,t forget to throw some grammer in there as well.

fingers + thumbs from palm beach

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night's sleep...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

ruaridh from ruantallin

Did not Blackbeard (or is it the famous pirate from Stromness?) bury his loot in Jura? If Jura folks could only collaborate in a search for it ( on Hog. day?), the resulting discovery might just solve all your problems/squabbles by funding any and every project. Stranger things have happened. Please do keep the rest of the world posted. Gracias.

mjc from NM,USA

Does Ruaridh beleive anyone with an opinion is typecast English "GET A LIFE SON!!!!!" SLEEP WELL !!!!

From the spawn of the wise deceased old folk of ju from on the outside looking in

Rumour has it that this scheme has been binned and definately won't be starting this year. Anyone know if this is true?

Backward Hillbilly from Craighouse

Yep, although Robin Currie (taking an indian meal without paying) is still trying to get 拢300,000 to fund it. Nutter, why not stick that into the ferry crossing from feolin to Port Askaig?

Me from Here

IT WOULD SURLEY BE A GOOD IDEA ,FOR PASSENGERS FAR BETTER THAN GOING TO ISLAY THEN TO JURA ,I AM SURE THAT THE ISLAND WOULD BENIFIT FROM MORE TROUISTS ,

JOE from mainland

You have a possible option, what about a Community funded, and Community ran service. The Island could benifit from a Rib built locally in Redbay, 11m long with twin Diesel engines. The accodomation similar to Islay Sea Safari, seating only, no vehicles. If locally held events generated some fundraising cash, possible sponsorship from some of the Deer Estates, or bigger businesses on the Island, for example it would be good for getting tourists to visit the Distillery . If the Islanders themselves could part finance, and the remainder of the cost borrowed. A crew of two trained local people, could run the ferry twice a day to the Mainland, providing a valuable service to the Island, and some local employment

Gavin from Ireland

It will never happen in a million years, all invoved are totally without a clue about real life and how a business has to operate. Funding should only be given to start up business's that are viable but need the initial capital funding due to lack of personal funding. Even then, I think any funding should have to be repaid. Maybe that would put a stop to all these stupid idea's that have not got a hope in hell of making money.

Stephen from Jura

Not so daft now!
