Important - new Terms and Conditions

Hope you're all well and enjoying the fine weather.

Now for some serious business. The recently introduced Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 came into effect on 26 May this year.

This has implications for those involved in social media. In terms of Island Blogging specifically it bans the creation of fake blogs.

I don't imagine these are practices which any Island Blogger indulges in, and it might seem insulting to re-inforce that they are to be made illegal. However, just to make you aware that the law has changed, and that this unethical behaviour is now also illegal.

The new guidelines will be enforced by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) and administered by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

The terms and conditions of use of this site have been amended accordingly - please read these.

Hi Carol, what on earth would constitute a 'fake blog' ...?!! Does that mean that strictly speaking we can't 'embellish' our descriptions ...?!! or perhaps it is just meant for people who only 'pretend' to live on an island ...? perhaps a little precis of the changes, as they apply to us is called for ... :-) I'll go and have a look anyhow ...

soaplady from struggling with concept ... :-)

Fantastic list of ideas there to try out there, thanks.

well, we'll all have to come clean now, as you know I'm thin as a rake, 36 22 36, and have long blonde hair. photos to prove all this will follow in due course. I sing in a band and travel the world. I'm rich , famous and sign autographs daily.

how come my 2 comments asking about the disappearance of the King Gog of Gog's blog seem to get booted? Do such questions break some rule too?

pondhead from Tobermory

I've been out of the office, hence the delay in replying. Carol from over here - yes, you can still write to IBHQ.

Carol from IBHQ

to carol over there: thanks: Am i right in thinking "king gog of gog's" blog was taken off as i think it came from another blogger living in the western isles?

carol from over here

Oh dear my illusions have now been shattered--squidgy isn't really an otter,---is flying cat really a cat?does wild freckle have a freckle, maybe "thewhitesettler" is red-maybe the soaplady doesn't make these lovely soaps afterall, does "irishmanabroad"come from ireland??help!

carol from in the sun

I assume that all Carol from IBHQ means is: 1 person (on island, with address etc) 1 blog: the name of the blog or the contents (within limits) are not relevant. The blogger could become a cat, an otter, a dragon, a lighthouse or a straightforward (but very interesting) Fred Blog or Mountainman etc. # The new rule is fine, Carol from IBHQ, but I don't think the term "unethical" is an invariably appropriate characterization for those who tried to have a second blog. Too harsh. Just say that (ignoring the legal aspects for the moment), for transparency's sake, one blog per person is better.

Re: King Gog of Gog, I can tell you that those blogs were not in any way taken down by IBHQ.

Carol from IBHQ

quick--where's miss marple or mr poirot???

carol from crooked house

Flying Cat is a moniker for Flying Felon (as we all know, or should know by now). As to Irishman Abroad, I would bet a pretty penny he is indeed from Ireland (County Mayo, so help us, right IA?). As to Wild Freckle: well, do you really have freckles, WF?! What about Sunny (hi Sunny! how are things in Espana?!) - did she really have a sunny disposition (at least until the roof caved in)? And Madlamb: the name says it all... etc etc

He probably took one grog too many and scuttled his own blog. # It's not as easy as it may seem to survive incognito. Not when you have the likes of Carol and Jill sniffing around.

mjc from NM,USA

well okay i own up--my name is not really carol but miss marple and jill is really hetty wainthorpe

carol --- from here, there and everywhere

I'm not sure that's very flattering to Jill...

Flying Cat from incatceration
