Lurv is in the air

(insert tinkly music bit) ooo lurv is in the air

So lass.. Can I wack you hame the night ? I

I've been keeping up with some of the debate going on in the aftermath of Hugh's chicken run & jamies fowl dinner's. Do you know that rather to many see keeping free range poultry as animal cruelty & sub standard welfare, our birds can get out and get wet/muddy (Dirty !) they have free access to weeds (Does that make them Hippy Henny ?).

What can one say to such miss educated stupidity.

What a load of Cock A Doodle

Its all gone very romantic around these parts. Softens the heart to watch such arduous attempts by our feathered men folks

Are you dancing cos im asking

But as ever, there is always the odd one out

What ya mean that maran packs more in his tail feathers than I have in my comb !

Big Big Big day today !!!!

Last june Robyn incubated & hatched & reared 2 lines of cuckoo maran bantams... Today .... We had the first egg from one of the hens ! "Can we get the breeding pens up & going now mum" was what I was getting within 10 mins of the fantastic egg find. Managed to put her off for another 3 weeks, better for rooster boy if the other 2 hens come into lay first before we put them in a wee family group & besides, having the maran bantam girls laying may just spur the croad langshan bantam lass into lay too.

Robyn also reminded me of a promise I made to her last year. We have to source and hatch out some hardy Muscovy ducks. Any island bloggers up this way can sell us some Muscovy hatching eggs ?

Went to buy a free range chicken fae the Co-Op on Saturday, and guess what? All sold out. Just shelves filled with the Other Kind. My local shops don't stock free range chickens, or eggs for that matter. But my main reason for leaving a comment today is that I am jealous of your techno skills, that Chicken Out film is far superior my Live Links.

I bought twelve muscovy eggs from ... wait for it ... eBay ...! You have to be prepared for some duds, because postage doesn;t always treat them well ... But it's one way of getting them ... Why do not a lot of people have muscovy ducks ... Or perhaps, like me, they just can't find where the ducks lay the eggs, in order to sell them ...!

Yes and they are still using the misleading labelling which looks all country-touchy-feelie-freerangey. What IS 'Elmwood'?

Soaplady. I gave up on ebay. Spent near 拢200 on egg on ebay last year & only got 4 birds out of it. Trying to get Muscovy local, or at least island stock. Most of my aylesburry & cayuga came from Lewis as eggs last year and they had a 99% hatch rate (only 2 duds !) compared to the dozen Aylesburry that came from england & only hatched 3. I suspect 2 of our aylesburry are laying, but where, i cant find & the devils wont co-operate when I try to shut them into the runs at night. Going to have to try bribery en mass tomorrow.

Lurv in the air? You have not seen mallard males hot on the trail of a desperate (to escape) female? No, sirree, they won't take no for an answer. Of course, a shotgun should do a decent job of thinning them out. # Angela: 50 pounds (100+ dollars) per bird. You are almost as profligate as Mitt Romney: but of course, he's after voters ... Really, you should get yourself one good specimen and start cloning like mad. I am suggesting this for poultry, not cats (thank you very much!).
