Up Helly Aa's and more

Phew, that's Scalloway Fire Festival finished for this year!

A perfect evening for the procession and burning, and for visiting the halls during the night. Not to mention the activities that took place during the rest of the weekend. The second weekend was the "Return" where all the acts are reprised in the Scalloway Hall for the benefit of other guizers. Another great night of entertainment.

I am now deep in the midst of final preparations for what will be a one and only guest appearance in the Jarl Squad for Lerwick Up Helly Aa. A hugely busy week lies ahead. Visitations to schools, hospitals and Town Hall on tuesday, and all climaxed with the torchit procession through the streets of Lerwick and the burning of the Galley. A night of festivities follows with visits to 12 halls throughout the night.

Any Island Bloggers out there visiting the event - then I'll be easily spotted - dressed as a Viking and with a beard. You'll have a one in 56 chance of being right!

However, it has not been all fun and games during the month. - Sadly, a good friend, Rowing team mate, and an ex member of our Trondra Men's fire festival squad died suddenly at the age of 48. He was remembered with an exemplary minute's silence before the burning of the Scalloway galley, and tributes at his very well attended funeral. As I seem to remember someone else commenting recently in a blog, there have been far too many early deaths in Shetland in recent months.

Good to hear from you again Ardnort. Sorry to hear about the untimely death of your pal. Take care of yourself. Stay away from Crisco and deep fried anything (except for chips, of course). # Have lots of fun at the Up Helly in Lerwick. I am sure you'll cut a dashing figure. I don't believe ibloggers will have any problem identifying you, old guizer: all they will have to do is pick the Viking with the manic grin of the born arsonist getting ready to have his yearly fix. Again, Ardnort, have lots of fun. Wish I were there to cheer you on.

Ardnort, I fully expect an invitation do dance...

Ruthodanort from will be at the TA hall on Tuesday...

Do dance? Do do. And there's nothing like the smell of paraffin in the nostrils at this time of year!

ardnortrupshot from watching out for you in the TA,,,

It's just after 10am on the day after the Lerwick "Fire Festival" and I guess Ardnort you may now be taking a well earned rest. I saw some of your comrades outside the British Legion earlier this morning looking remarkably fresh and well. Sorry I didn't catch up with you yesterday but diamondbigdodette had some great photos of you and you did look rather splendid. The weather was fantastic last night and the burning was one of the most glorious I have seen. Hope Ruthodanort kept you 'birlin' in the TA and that mv has some photographic evidence to share with us in a future blog.

Dance? DANCE? Huh!

Ruthodanort from In the poots

well, wi 56 of them in the hall there was no room to move, and bear in mind how heavy the outfit was ... apparently da jarl's one was 4 and a half stones....I spent a happy half hour feeling a vikings outfit (well, it is their night...) (and I enjoyed it..) and trying to lift various bits of it - bit of an experience, I must say... Well he didna object! and no, I didna get a dance fae ardnort either....

scallowawife from recoverin... twas a good night...

Oh dear...what went wrong?

Flying Cat from a dainty pirouette

I spotted Ruthodanort when we entered the hall, but when I went to get her up for a dance she had strangely, or conveniently, gone missing She only re-appeared as we were about to leave. And I didn't know that scallawawife was there at all. Perhaps it was just as well I never got a dance with Ruthodanort - I vaguely recall that the last time I danced in her vicinity I ended up with a cut eye - although she was probably not directly responsible! And yes, the suit did attract alot of trivling during the night!

ArdnortRupshot from having to defend myself

Ok, you bring that up NOO? Talk about convenient!! Wait till I tell my sister your blogging identity. Actually, at UHA you were just a bit slow off the mark, Ardnort, cos an Unken Viking akxed me to dance instead. And very enjoyable it was too. Scallowawife was at Northlink I think.

Ruthodanort from Unst

So, Vikings dance, do they? What's it they do? Oh, aye, the stomp !! (that's what Squidgy calls it, I suspect. Not as dainty as "The Coll" ...)

mjc from NM,USA

The hunky vikings let you feel their outfits??? Don't tell fpu for goodness sake...anything could happen... trivling eh?

Apologies for only getting round to reading this blog now. Ruthodanort - I already know the ID of Ardnort, and I can confirm that the cut eye was entirely of A's own doing - something to do with too much falling down juice and an almost complete lack of balance!!
