Making totals with a specified number and value of coins (signed)
Description
A class of children are taking part in a game show called 鈥楴umbervator鈥. The presenter challenges a child to make 74p using just five of the coins. The solution is checked and displayed to the audience. Another child is then challenged to make 拢1.88 without repeating any coin value in the solution.
Classroom Ideas
Either by setting up a real tuck shop or a pretend tuck shop, pupils could buy items, demonstrating how they would pay for them using the least number of coins. If change is required, they could show the least number of coins required to pay back. Pupils should be shown how to record each transaction clearly in writing. A fun plenary activity could be to display more price tags and challenge pupils to identify the least number of coins to pay for the item as quickly as they can.
