Estimating and calculating distance
Description
Captain Calamity estimates and measures distance in kilometres and estimates the number of sheep in a field to successfully rescue Princess Amber. Princess Amber is held prisoner by the Evil Ruler. Captain Calamity can only rescue her by completing a quest. This quest involves bringing back a tail feather from the Golden Phoenix. Progress of the distance travelled is checked along the way, both as estimates and as actual measurements calculated by the Tripmeter. From this Captain Calamity can work out how far he has travelled and how far he still has to go. As he gets closer to finding the Golden Phoenix, he also has to estimate the number of sheep in a field.
Classroom Ideas
Can be used as part of a lesson on the place of estimation in maths. The lesson can begin with pupils asked to help in the compilation of a list of measurements that cannot easily be calculated accurately. These can be written on the board. The clip can then be shown and, afterwards, pupils asked to make an estimate of the length of the room. They can then write these down. Following this, pupils can be asked to come up with ideas on how their estimate could be slightly more accurate without them using a ruler or measuring tape. Ultimately, pupils can use an object they know the approximate length of and see how many times it will fit across the room. They can then use multiplication to work out another estimate of the length of the room. Finally, the actual measurement of the room can be provided and pupils can look at which of their estimates was closest.
