Tackling racism (pt 1/2)

Description

In the first of a two clip sequence on tackling racism, Asian school boy Cheten talks openly about his experiences of racist remarks and attitudes. In his video report, Cheten interviews his dad, asking how it made him feel knowing that his son was a victim of racism. He also asks him to define institutional racism.

Classroom Ideas

The word 鈥榬acism鈥 could be written on a board or large piece of paper, and each student given a post it note. Ask students to write what they believe racism is on their post it note. The responses could then be shared and displayed around the word, racism. This activity could be repeated, this time with the word 鈥榬acist鈥 written inside the outline of a body. Students could then fill this outline with words and phrases to describe a racist.

Students could discuss how experiencing racism made Chetan feel? They could also discuss the feelings of his parents. Ask students to consider their opinions on how Chetan鈥檚 first school reacted to the news he was facing racism. What should they have done? Students could role-play a meeting with Chetan, his parents and the head teacher. As a head teacher what plans would they put in place to tackle this problem? Further interactions could be role-played including teachers talking with the students regarding their racist behaviour.

Alternatively, students could research their own school鈥檚 anti-racism policy, and create an action plan for anyone who faces racism. This action plan could be displayed on posters around the school.
