Family conflict

Description

In this clip we hear how Jenny does not want to get up in the morning. She feels that there is always conflict between herself and her mum and brother. Jenny describes constant nagging and how her friends鈥 families are much nicer than hers. We see her writing an advert putting her family up for sale.

Classroom Ideas

Students could be organised into three teams, one could represent Jenny, and the others her mum and brother. A series of questions could then be posed to the class and each team could answer these from their character鈥檚 perspective. For example, do you think Jenny is being helpful? Who is causing the conflict in the morning?

Students could then be asked to create a cycle of thoughts, feelings and behaviour for each character, to explore how each of these aspects influence each other. For example, Jenny thinks 鈥楳um is just going to shout at me鈥, in turn she refuses to get out of bed in the morning, and this then makes her feel like she can鈥檛 do anything right in her mum鈥檚 eyes. Ask students to consider how they could change one of these to change the whole cycle. Students could then role-play the situation with their planned change and see how it turns out differently.
