A shame, but maybe a blessing in disguise this season....Arteta making too many changes has cost us tonight....we don't have a good enough second string for that yet. He needs to remember he's not at Man CIty anymore!

Arsenal 1-1 Sporting Lisbon (Agg 3-3, 3-5 on pens)

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to BT Sport: "A huge blow obviously. There were moments in the first 75 minutes where we weren't at our level. We gave every ball away and we didn't have the capacity to take the game. There were chances to win it in extra-time. There was a lot of uncertainty with the pens.

"It was a very difficult game.

"We didn't win enough duals in certain spaces. We didn't put the ball under pressure well enough. We gave the ball away consistently and it created a really open game we didn't want to play.

"Injuries happened with Tomiyasu and Saliba. We are really restricted with the changes because we only have one window to do one and we didn't have the subs left.

"We had big chances to finish the game off.

"We just have to look at ourselves and why we were not good enough to go through. We congratulate Sporting and now we have 11 games. Our next game with Palace is a final. Every work we do right now has to be towards Palace and we have to be better than in this game."

Arsenal have failed to win any of their last five knockout stage games at the Emirates Stadium in the Europa League (D3 L2), since beating Valencia 3-1 in May 2019.

This is one to quickly put behind them.

They'll be hoping the injuries to Takehiro Tomiyasu and William Saliba aren't serious and then it's on to a big league game against Crystal Palace here in a few days time.

They've got bigger trophies to try and win.

  5. 'We win and lose together'published at 23:12 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2023

FT: Arsenal 1-1 Sporting Lisbon (Arsenal lose on penalties)

    Arsenal

Arsenal's Martin Odegaard to BT Sport: "I think we did enough in some periods of the game but most of the game we weren't on the level we should be. We didn't play our best football. It was a tight game in the end, it could have gone both ways.

They are a good team, we knew that, we were prepared. It was more about us today, we didn't play the way we normally do with the same energy we normally do. Now we have to look forward.

We have to remember it's been a great season, it's a big blow to go out of this competition. But now we look forward to the league, that's all we can do now.

We win and lose together. It doesn't matter. When we're winning everyone is happy, when we lose we have to pick up the spirit. We win and lose together.

I think Gabriel Jesus has moments where he looked very sharp. But he looked like a player who is still trying to find his rhythm and getting some game time.

I have to say I thought Arsenal were a little bit unfortunate, especially with the chances they created in the extra time.

In all fairness, the result over two legs is a fair reflection of how equal it was over both legs.

You have to give credit to Sporting. They started superbly before falling behind. But they kept to the game plan, scored a truly remarkable equaliser and were then the better side.

The Gunners could have won it in extra-time, but spurned some chances and also saw Antonio Adan in fine form.

That is a fantastic penalty to win the game. It is hit with real pace and power and it gives Aaron Ramsdale who went the right way, zero opportunity.
