Writing and stuff

Been to the writing group tonight, and managed to scribble down a few pages of stuff. I have all these snippets of writing, some characters, a vague plot, and an awfy grand idea that it might be a proper book. The only problem is I don't know what it's about. I mean really about. It has, as yet, no meaning. I live in the hope that one day it will all become clear!

I must confess I have had a crisis of identity with the blogging - I want to write about stuff that happens, but I am terrified that people will work out who I am, and let's face it, I didn't really think too much about being anonymous. If I write about work ( and I do about three different jobs), I run the risk of breaking codes of conduct, blah blah. I am also suffering from the perennial Orkney condition of not wanting to be too confrontational, or rocking the boat. I read the other blogs and I hang my head in shame because people really seem to say what they think. I am also, ashamed to admit that I have a very thin skin, and it doesn't take much to dent my confidence, so I suspect I don't let rip as I am afraid of being challenged. What a wimp, eh? It's for these reasons I admire Hermit and Moo so much - you get such a strong sense of who they are, frailties and all, regardless of what the world thinks of them. I like to think I don't give a monkey's what other people think, but I do. A lot.

I took a group of visitors round Orkney on Saturday, and the weather was superb, sunny, brisk breeze, scudding clouds. One lady said to me that before she came, she was reading about the Ring of Brodgar and thinking, 'how interesting can a bunch of stones be?' Then when we walked round it and chatted, she jsut couldn't believe how 'wonderful and magical' it is. We are so lucky - we can go up there any time of year - midsummer (shrouded in mist this year), first frosts, autumn sunsets, Northern Lights in winter, full moon, dawn, snow, rain, hail. And it is glorious every single time.

Next time, pics of the vegetables.

You are completely incognito to me, SD, never fear! I know what you mean about the identity crisis. I could never be a blogger a) for the same reasons you give and b) my life is so uneventful and I'm more of a hermit than Hermit! Good luck with the writing! I wouldn't even be able to open up in a writing group, so you aren't doing too badly :-)

I was going to write a book about the Apollo Moon Missions, but with a twist, they landed on the moon and got stuck there, they couldn't lift off, from the lunar surface, because they had used too much fuel finding a safe place to land on the moon. However, I did manage to get enough material together, you need permission from NASA, which wasn't forthcoming, as I asked them what would they do if their astronauts were stranded on the moon. It appears that they'd die there. I've still got all the information in boxes, maybe I will go back to it one day.

Aw shucks, SD, you don't have to be confrontational, just interesting. Take Annie B.: not a confrontational bone in that Fank impresario. She takes care of her presentation, clearly works hard on her writing, and she invariably packs a wallop. I would not mind having her (and a few other bloggers) as neighbors. With them around, life could not be other than very interesting.

I'm sure you're as interesting as the rest of us, Jill. It's all in the mind...

But I'm not photogenic either, FC. I don't have whiskers or stripes like you, or even floppy ears like Coco or Mac or Getoffthe...

Jill from EK

Tatoos, how about tatoos Jill from EK? You could be one up on the island dogs and cats. It may be too big a price to pay for one up-manship though.

On balance, and even from a biased feline point of view, I think whiskers and stripes and floppy lugs might be a bit of a disadvantage to a human, rather than an asset...

Flying Cat from a balanced view

Tattoos - well, I suppose I could have some stripes tattooed on, a sort of more permanent version of face painting. Plus plastic surgery on my ears, maybe? These cats and dogs wouldn't stand a chance!

Your secret's safe with us Stromness Dragon. I don't even know where Cognito is, let alone anyone in the place. Humans with whiskers and stripes sound like French onion sellers. Perhaps Carol knows some and can comment on their ears? (You fair made me blush with pleasure there mjc. Thank you for your kind remarks. Did you have a good trip?)

Annie B from the usual

Next time pics of vegetables...did I blink and miss them?

Flying Cat from just asking like...
