Pre-emptive planting

Big winds last night, runner beans all broken. Very upset.

Very sorry to hear it SD. Your pics were lovely. Any chance of replacing them through a local nursery like the one in Holm? They were at the Garden Show and fpu got some small beany things which weren't expensive. And just as well too....

Is there time still to replant? What a pity after all your work and very tidy bean support system.

Jill from EK

Don't eat too many mushrooms, they always give me wind too. And it's not so good for the Ozone layer, I think?

Its wet here as well Tws. Even the dog doesn't like it.

Muness from Fetlar

Sorry to hear that. Hope there are enough frost free days to replant and have a decent harvest. Don't be discouraged.

mjc from NM

I can empathise, the slugs ate all our basil last year within a day of it being planted out. I've discovered that they don't like rocket so we're having lots of that this year. I'm sure you've got time to replant.

Frost is not a problem in an oceanic climate. In fact, we have not had nearly enough frost during recent winters. It's the wind that does the damage and SD's allotment is in rather an elevated position. Great for the view, but not the plants.

Would there be a way to train beans to go horizontal ( like a trellis slightly raised but lying flat)? Would that maybe beat the winds? Crazy notion I suppose.

FC and Strom. are working their respective allotment, macQ. Space is limited. They don't have miles of flood irrigated desert at their disposal. But interesting idea/suggestion nevertheless. They could use bush beans, but a garden without a poled trellis would not look as neat as Stromness's.

I am touched by your concern, dear bloggers. I'm going to start off some more in pots and put some straight in the ground, too. Fingers crossed! I think every Orkney gardener has a tale of woe about being too optimistic about the weather. Re the horizontal option macQ, a pal of mine grows peas along the ground, says he has bumper crops. Anyhow, everything else is growing so I shouldn't girn too much.

Oh dear. A sad story of has-beans.

Annie B from Lewis

mjc, we live out on the "other side" of the Sandias and you know we get terrific winds, I suppose I could test my notion out here! But it is such a shame that their runners got ruined. .

Oooooh. Another blog that's live online this weekend!!!! I'm assuming a techy hitch is responsible for the lack of available blogs this weekend, and I thought that Back of Beyond was the only available one, but I see I am mistaken!! Think I'll go and have another peedie search for available blogs.

I gave up at the first hurdle and returned to watching bipedal Folk Festival antics...
