Sounds like real treasure, Sparkie, I wish I could do the same but my other half would have something to say... Where will you put it all?
Jill from EK
Well, don't you go putting ideas into Mr Tormod's head. I won't have that sort of junk cluttering up Tormod Towers.
Mrs Tormod from Spick and Span
what does one do with a lathe ...?! I would imagine that one smooths things with it, but that's the limit of my knowledge ... :-)) I know what end grain is though, having done the Basic Woodworking course at Lewes Castle College with that nice Mr MacIver ... I can appreciate your plane just fine ... :-)
soaplady from technologically-challenged
If it flies, so can I...
Flying Cat from a single engine
Where did you find stuff heaven. I need most of the stuff you mentioned and a lot more. I am now suffering from lathe envy. Why on earth did you buy a bowl, you can't do anything with a bowl.
Tormod from I need all of those
I make it two bowls. Does this make a difference to their usefulness? Some useful things come in pairs...
Flying Cat from just trying to be helpful
Oh err doesn't envy (received) give you a warm glow ! The lathe is for machining bits of metal, it's a boy thing. This lathe has screw cutting which my other one doesn't. (He's got two!!) The place where they all came from was Lincoln. In the summer they hold the biggest antique fair in Europe 4000+ stalls with lots of foreign stalls. They hold them four times a year but the summer one is the biggy. The bowl doesn;t do anything, it's just gorgeus, infact if you put anything in it you would spoil it. cheers the Sparkie
sparkie from out on a limb
You can do many things with or in a bowl, Tormod from the Pisa Towers. Personally, I would rather have a Ming one than an Art Deco reject. A little prejudice of mine. That's me, mjc, from the fringes of Sotheby.
mjc from IN, USA
Two bowls equals double the clutter whereas two lathes are double the usefulness. Do you have a wood lathe as well? I really need a wood lathe, I also really need a Citreon H van a tractor, a small holding and a guitar. Mrs Tormod simply doesn't understand the needs we men have for stuff. Never mind I shall try and get her to cancel the holiday to the US next year (too many old blows and all mingers apparently) and arrange to go to Lincoln.
Tormod from not so super bowl
Ummmm I don't like to be at all argumentative, being an agreeable cat, but...surely Mrs Tormod has her own need for useful things which take up space? Eg and to wit:- immense quantities of kitchen gadgets; cupboards full of something called material 'stash'; threads/wools/ribbons/; tottering piles of books; mounds of charity shop clothes (which might fit some day); Useful Stuff from car booters...
Flying Cat from any or all of these?
Stopping Mrs. Tormond for visiting the USA (and shop till she drops, things being so decently priced here compared to the UK), what a terrible idea. Forfend the man!! Why don't you come with the Mrs., Tormod: lots of yard sales and auctions (anything goes: old tractors, defunct mowers, distressed this or that): you would like it very much. And in between you could gobble down at the all you can eat buffets.
mjc from IN, USA
Now, now, now, flying cat I am going to have to defend Mrs Tormod. I am sure that she will eventually find a use for all these cook books she has, you never know maybe one day she might even follow the instructions inside them. I definitely also think that no woman is complete without 17 pairs of trainers (heavens, I even saw her walking quite quickly once), and 19 pairs of shoes. This is one of the reasons I need the lathe, so I can make the bed higher to accomodate all the footwear. I think I will be in the good books with her after this.
Tormod from defending Mrs Tormod )not that she told me to you
Now look here EffCee, this isn't your run-of-the-mill nonsense blog but a SERIOUS DISCUSSION about SERIOUS THINGS. For goodness sake don't disturb it with irrelevancies that even a cat should be capable of recognising. A lathe is a lathe is a lathe and how do you use two at the same time? Which reminds me that it is rather poignant that EffCee should consider that useful things come in twos, when he doesn't have them.
Barney from Swithiod no nonsense please
Oh dear I think Tormod was going to call me names, but unfortunately got cut off in his prime. Don't get me wrong (as if you would) but why does Mrs T need training?...and thank you Barney for reminding me of my little deficiencies...you aren't half getting in a lathe-r!
Flying Cat from a futon
that it is rather poignant that EffCee should consider that useful things come in twos, when he doesn't have them. Barney from Swithiod no nonsense please # Now, now Barney, that remark is quite below the belt (ha! ha!). When you add those of FC to Marmers, there should be enough for you to juggle with. Send pics!!
mjc from IN, USA
Tormod, you should also do shelves, with partitions, for her to be able to store shoes and trainers, not to mention the dozen wellies etc. I did not know Imelda Marcos had moved to the islands (under suitable disguise of course).
mjc from IN, USA
Now jmc, I am really tempted, a yard sale you say - I think I need one of those. But I know what you are doing. You know fine well that if you mention yard sale there will be a mass exodus from Scotland to the USA of Scottish men in need of more stuff, I myself could do with a defunct mower.. This is just an attempt to refloat the US economy. Anyway you have tempted me and I was going to book tickets but unfortunately Mrs T read my previous post about the cook books and now my credit has been metaphorically crunched so I won't be able to get a biometric passposrt for some time.
Tormod from very tempted
Barney, that was definitely below the belt! (in a manner of speaking)
Jill from EK
Mjc and Jill - that's me, true to form... but we love EffCee in spite of, or perhaps even because of, his spirit in the face of said deficiencies.
Barney from Swithiod swanking again
Only metaphorically?
Flying Cat from looking hopeful
Antique fairs, boot sales, yard sales; when am I going to get to a boat jumble. I've made space. Honest! I've given away the electric trains and the scalextric and I've half cleared the garage. All need is some more books and a few boaty bits.
Hyper-Borean from The slip
sailing books, boat building and refurbishing books, others on sea adventures and the lives of pirates: the list is endless. And that's before the hardware comes in. It might be easier to grab yourself one from the port: wait till next summer though, when the weather gets better. Barney might be willing to help: if he does, he'll be in disguise, hidden by a handlebar moustache (so I have heard).
mjc from IN, USA
Have you been looking at my library mjc? Apart from a shortage of pirates you've nailed me. As for the hardware, I am very lucky in that my friends own the boats I enjoy sailing in.
Hyper-Borean from The bibliotheque
You can buy a boat jumble in Trron this week-end, going cheap, HB! In addition I can supply you with spinnaker, winches, Bruce anchor, fenders, roeps (odds and ends), Scandinavian charts and useless broken electronic things. They are yours for a stuffed rhesus money and a rain check on an ice-cream at "The Twinkler's" caff. Ex works, of course.
